GRAND CAYMAN ISLANDS ESCAPE Posted on February 25, 2014 by Traveler Fun under TravelerFun

OR THE PAST FEW YEARS, MY FAMILY AND I HAVE BEEN traveling over the winter holidays instead of celebrating at home. This winter

instead of skiing down mountainsides or snowmobiling through the snow in Colorado, we chose to elude the polar vortex and escape to the Grand Cayman Islands for a week. Upon arrival the first thing I noticed in addition to the crystal clear water was the unusual amount of chickens and roosters walking around everywhere. Instead of seagulls flocking the sidewalks, chickens pecked and bobbed up and down the streets. There were also plenty of iguanas, curly-tailed lizards and snails lining the path up to our condo, making every outing a nature excursion.

We stayed in a condo during our trip to get the full Cayman experience instead of staying in an all-inclusive hotel, but ended up renting a car from the Marriott. Although the rental car was convenient to have, it definitely wasn’t a necessity. We walked to the pool, the

beaches and to restaurants for the majority of our island getaway. Our time was spent snorkeling and laying out on the beach, where I finished the entire Divergent series in three days.

We spent most of our time on Seven Mile Beach, which is home to several snorkeling spots and hotels and restaurants where you can take a break from the sun and enjoy appetizers or drinks. My favorite meal of the trip was at Chicken! Chicken! partially because of the name, but mostly because the jerk chicken was fantastic. The water is a gorgeous clear blue and was a big change from the murky waters I was used to seeing along the Texas coast. There are plenty of beaches to explore on the island, like Rum Point and Smith’s Cove.

The gorgeous water and soft sand may make you want to spend all of your days relaxing on the beach, but there are a few attractions everyone should experience while in the Grand Cayman Islands.

1) VISIT STING RAY CITY My favorite part of the Grand Cayman Islands was taking a boat out to Stingray City. You wade out into shallow water as stingrays of all sizes come up and brush against your leg. The stingrays are friendly and as soft as velvet.

2) A GUIDED FISHING TRIP If you love fishing, I recommend going out with a guide. Not only do you get to spend the afternoon deep-sea fishing, you get to see the best fishing spots and catch the best fish without the clean up! Just be careful if you tend to get seasick because the water gets rough as you go out further.

3) A GUIDED SNORKELING TRIP Snorkeling on your own is fun but we saw lots of interesting fish and got to experience more secluded reefs when going on a boat with a guide. We also got to go diving for conch shells, eat the conch raw, learn how to clean out the shells and keep them as souvenirs.

4) GEORGE TOWN George Town is a short drive away from the main hotels on the island and is a great place to shop. The city has lots of cool souvenirs and restaurants to explore. Where do you go to warm up in the Winter? Leave your thought
