Giorgio Del Buono, Graphic Design, University For The Creative Arts, Farnham. As a student, what is the most important rule you’ve learnt about typography/creating a typeface?
anything that relates to text and page rather than creating a font that then becomes type design. We’ve learnt a lot about both. The most important thing is understanding the basics composition. Have you seen a typeface recently that you thought was badly placed with the message? I see it everyday. Good typography is invisible. Bad type you is just my student opinion! Are you taught the importance of matching the typeface to
you can be imposed to use a certain type of font. In terms of graphic design and what I do it is to understand the language. Its a lot about other content which is relevant to the choice of typeface. There needs to be a rationalization for the use of the chosen font. 5
What typeface have you seen recently that impressed you
“The most successful use of type is when you see the typography and you understand why that font has been used.”
The 1972 Munich Olympic font. It was all set in ‘Univers’ and been done very well, the typeface and typography for Munich Olympics communicated the message well and had good consistency. Everything had the same style throughout.
Graphic Designer. When you’re creating your typeface and design for Deus, do you create the typeface and then create the work or do you base your illustration around what the message is? Yeah they are always related. Is the style of the type at the forefront of your mind or the illustration? They are one and the same. The end result is the sum of its parts.
“ I don’t think you should set out to make it (the existing typeface that works then maybe that’s the best thing to use ”
Yes or No: Typography does more than communicate a language and gives a greater meaning to words. Yes I agree with that. In your early days of graphic design did you learn to create typeface from traditional methods? Yes I learnt the rules of typography. There is great pressure for typographers to create your process? That question assumes that the typographer sees
best thing to use. What is your opinion about hand drawn typeface and it’s place within typography? I would say to that everyone needs to eat nuts and berries (both traditionally designed typeface and hand drawn have their place).
