Brand Messaging

Messaging Overview To be truly effective, any messaging from Highland Community College must give the recipient “reasons why” they should attend or associate with the College. When producing any piece of communication on behalf of HCC, be sure to include any or all of the following points to give support to the document: Wide Range of Courses - from academic prerequisites to business training and community education programs, HCC offers something for everyone. Six Convenient Locations - Highland main campus with regional sites in Atchison, Baileyville (Western), Holton, Perry, and Wamego Affordable - because of our size and resources, we’re able to offer an education at much lower costs than bigger colleges and universities, while still retaining high standards and national accreditation. The use of these benefits can assist in providing incentive and increasing interest, as well as promoting a positive feeling about HCC, its people, and its programs.

College Mission Statement HCC, the first college in Kansas, provides lifelong learning opportunities and contributes to economic development to enhance the quality of life in the communities we serve.

College Visual Statement Highland Community College is recognized as the college of choice in Northeast Kansas. Vital Characteristics Highland Community College began as Highland University in 1858, making it the first college in Kansas. After eight name changes, the College is now in its 157th year of providing higher education opportunities to the people of Northeast Kansas in a small rural setting. The College has traditionally prepared students to continue their studies at baccalaureate institutions. Studies conducted at the Regents universities in Kansas show that students who begin their college careers at HCC and then transfer do as well or better academically than all other students who transfer to those universities and those who start there. In July of 2008, the region’s technical college merged with the College, allowing HCC to expand its educational services to the nine county service area in Northeast Kansas. Governance The College is governed by a six-member Board of Trustees comprised of residents of Doniphan County, the location of the original campus, who are elected for four-year terms. Three members are up for re-election every two years. On the state level, HCC is coordinated by the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR), which governs the state’s six universities. KBOR was reconstituted by legislative action in 1999 to include coordination of the state’s 19 community colleges and 12 technical schools. Prior to 1999, Kansas community colleges and technical schools were under the auspices of the State Board of Education, which governs the state’s K-12 system. The 1999 change was designed to implement a seamless system of higher education in the state. Mission The initial appraisal of our first portfolio resulted in a yearlong strategic planning process. That experience provided the opportunity for the Board of Trustees to revisit and refine the Mission Statement it adopted in 1997. New Mission and Vision Statements were adopted in August of 2009.

College Logo

Design Elements The logo is not only a symbol, but also a piece of artwork that should not be reproduced in type or used in body copy, headlines, or the possessive, plural, or as a part of another word, nor should it ever be altered in any way.

The HCC logo is the primary identification of our College and as such, it should appear on all HCC communications. Templates are available for College documents with the correct logo usage. Use these templates when communicating internally or externally with students, vendors, and the community.

Logo Size Restrictions Minimum Size The minimum size for use of the preferred HCC logo will depend on media or how it’s produced. Use the following as a rule and refer all exceptions to Public Relations & Marketing for review. When using the horizontal version of the logo, size comparably.

Print:

1 inch in height.

Measurement should always be from the top of the “H” to the bottom of the descenders in “Community College.”

Maximum size There is no maximum size for the HCC logo usage. However, attention needs to be paid to the integrity of the logo as distortion and image quality can often become a factor in larger-format processes.

Proportions If you are using the logo on a non-template document, be sure to size the logo proportionally to fit your materials. Never stretch or compress the logo in any way as this distorts the artwork and is no longer a true representation of the College.
