Gravel & Grass Stabilisation The process of gravel stabilisation was originally developed in Holland over 25 years ago and has become a significant paving and driveway solution in the UK, as greater emphasis on sustainability and maximum recyclability has become an essential ingredient in modern construction. Cedar Nursery has been supplying stabilised gravel reinforcement panels since 2003. We are main UK distributors for Nidagravel™ by Nidaplast, one of the leading European producers of honeycomb plastics in Europe. We also supply StableDRIVE heavy-duty gravel stabiliser and StablePATH. StableDRIVE was introduced to give greater lateral control for more intense vehicular applications and StablePATH as a permeable pathway system, which was free draining, low maintenance and cost effective to install. All products are either made from fully recycled materials or part recycled materials – all of which are fully recyclable. Stabilised gravel provides a natural alternative to Resin Bonded paving, asphalt and other paving materials. Benefits     

Fully permeable pavement layer—SUDS compatible Contained natural grass and gravel surfaces No sinking, rutting or gravel migration Honeycomb invisible after installation Load bearing with low maintenance requirements

A naturally permeable pathway system for pedestrian access StablePATH is a specially designed pathway gravel stabilisation panel to make permeable pathways simple and cost effective to install. StablePATH has been specially designed on smaller panels (1200x800mm) to make pathway installation quick and simple. The panel size of 1200x800mm means minimal cutting and wastage for either 800mm (one-way pedestrian pathway) or 1200mm (two-way pedestrian). The panel depth is 25mm - we recommend a maximum aggregate size of 10mm. StablePATH - 1200x800x25mm      

No sinking or rutting No spreading Free draining Wheelchair friendly Low maintenance Quick and easy to install

The Product It consists of polypropylene panels formed from hexagonal cells, which are then laid on compacted ground and filled with gravel. The panels are designed in such a way as to inhibit weed growth and help prevent gravel loss, whilst remaining free draining. The gravel compacts into the panel sections to form a solid surface. The Benefits     

A durable, firm and level surface. Easy passage for foot traffic, vehicles, pushchairs, bicycles and wheel chairs. Restricted gravel migration - low maintenance finish. Completely porous thereby reducing the need for complicated and expensive drainage solutions. SUDS compliant. Quick and easy to install, no specialist tools or training needed.

Nidagravel 140 is suitable for light vehicle and pedestrian use, ideal for residential driveway applications. We all know gravel can add an elegant touch to any driveway or business premises, but all too often the disadvantages which can be associated with gravel prevent it from becoming the product of choice. Thanks to nidagravel® driving, walking, cycling and wheeling a bicycle, wheelchair, pushchair or pram across gravel are no longer a problem. The gravel is laid in honeycombs which keep it in place and prevent it moving or migrating. Ugly ruts, puddles and potholes are a thing of the past. Nidagravel is supplied on 2400x1200mm panels, at a depth of 40mm. The panels come with an integrated woven membrane on the underside of the panel. The Product Nidagravel 140 consists of polypropylene panels (2400m x 1200mm) formed from hexagonal cells, these are then laid on compacted ground and filled with gravel. The panels are designed in such a way as to inhibit weed growth and help prevent gravel loss, whilst remaining free draining. The gravel compacts into the panel sections to form a solid surface.

Nidagravel 140: Cost effective life time investment   

Nidaplast trays are virtually maintenance free. If the honeycomb cells become exposed simply top up with gravel. A light raking once in a while will maintain the finished look, this isn’t arduous as you are only raking 10-20mm of gravel.

SUB BASE & INSTALLATION GUIDELINES Stabilised Gravel Paving       

Stabilised gravel honeycombs elements should be placed on suitable, compacted previously constructed sub base (see below for sub base options) Sub base should receive a lightly compacted blinding layer of up to 25-30 mm of grit sand or limestone/granite fines. Units should be bedded onto blinded surface, in a flat layer, to a slight fall if required. Stabilised gravel honeycombs units are then overfilled with selected gravel to a recommended depth. Gravel requirement will be 55 kg and 65kg per sq. metre depending on system used. After fill, surface should receive a misting of water to wash through any residual surface fines and then accelerate consolidation by a single pass with a plate vibrator or similar light compaction aid.

NOTES - SUB BASE OPTIONS: a.

For most applications including pedestrian, light vehicle and occasional access by emergency and utility traffic, sub base should comprises of 10 cm of fully compacted type 1 sub base, with a 25-30mm blinding layer.

b.

For regular heavier vehicle access and heavy traffic areas, such as car parks.15cm of fully compacted type 1 sub base, with a 2530mm blinding layer For domestic, pedestrian only applications it is possible to set the units onto compacted earth, followed by a sand blinding layer. For fully permeable paving, or water harvesting applications make up should be:

c. d.

Earth fully compacted Layer of geotextile 25 -27.5 cm of single size filter media gravel, compacted in layers. Geotextile layer Sand/fines bedding layer Stabilised gravel honeycombs panels filled to required depth and finished as per recommendations above.

16

Step 1. The panels are placed on the prepared sub base. Each product has either projecting flaps of membrane (Subsequent panels should be laid on these overlaps to inhibit weed growth between trays) or an integral clipping system.

Step 2. The retaining edging keeps the panels in place. All our systems can be cut easily with a power or hand saw to conform to any shape required.

Step 3. The vehicles / wheelbarrows used to deliver the gravel can be driven over the filled panels. The most effective way of filling them is from the front. This helps to compact the gravel already laid with each subsequent trip.

Step 4. The gravel is then simply spread out across the honeycombs with an overfill of approximately 10 to 20 mm to protect the panels and conceal them from sight.

Frequently Asked Questions What size gravel can you use?

Nidagravel 140 - Up to 16mm diameter StablePATH - Up to 10mm diameter StableDRIVE - Up to 20 diameter R-Pave - Up to 20 diameter

Does it drain?

Yes, water simply runs through the gravel and honeycomb – all products are completely porous.

How do you edge it?

1. Brick & Cement 2. Haunched concrete 3. Tanalised timber 4. Tarmacadam (for ramping to existing surfaces)

How long does it last?

We have seen applications in Holland which have been laid for approx. 15 years and are still being used. The product is UV stable, and is resistant to most chemicals.

Can you drive cars on this?

Yes (excluding StablePATH) with the correct sub-base (75mm to 200mm of hard-core / crushed concrete) and 25mm to 50mm of compacted sharp sand. The product will withstand occasional large lorries such as removal lorries, horse boxes, skip lorries and oil deliveries.

Can you use it on a slope?

Gentle slopes are OK; (up to 1 in 10) you must maintain the area by raking the gravel. If the honeycomb can be seen, this is when damage occurs.

Can you install it on an old drive / concrete base?

We do not recommend that you use the existing drive as a sub-base for the these products as this can cause drainage problems with non-porous materials.

Where are these made?

Nidagravel is produced in France, StableDRIVE, StableGRASS and R-Pave are from the UK—StablePATH is from Holland

Is it frost proof / heat proof?

Yes, to approx. -43C and +80C

What maintenance do I need to carry out?

Ensure that the honeycomb is always covered with a thin layer of gravel (approx. 10-20mm). If you can see the honeycomb this is when it can become damaged. You may need to top up the gravel on heavily trafficked areas. 18
