GLBC President Search After four years of service as President of Great Lakes Bible College, Art Ford has tendered his resignation effective June 30, 2017. GLBC has benefited greatly from his efforts on behalf of the school. His dedication to the school and his excellent ability to navigate its procedures, policies and by-laws will truly be missed. Great Lakes Bible College finds itself at a critical point. While online auditor numbers are up through group studies, our current on site student enrollment is lower than past years, and student recruitment is proving to be a critical task. As well, there is the ongoing challenge of fundraising. As we begin to look for a new president, we find ourselves most concerned that the person who comes to the role will have a strong focus particularly on these two key issues of recruitment and fundraising. Of course, there are many administrative duties in the role of president. The president is present at all meetings of the board and the executive committee, and serves as a voice on many other committees as well. Also necessary is regular communication with stakeholders, and coordination with our support services that operate out of Great Lakes Christian High School. We are looking for applicants with a strong commitment to the Lord Jesus and to his church, who also believes in and supports our mission to provide a university level program of Bible education that will prepare our students for effective spiritual living, Christian service, leadership, and world evangelism. Based on our current resources, we are offering a part-time position of approximately twenty hours per week. If you are interested in more information, please contact Ashley Hibbard at [email protected] or consult our full ad at www.glbc.ca.

Reflections By Randy Ang

While vacationing here in Canada during late summer, I was made aware of this small institution in Waterloo called Great Lakes Bible College through fellow church members at the Strathmore Church of Christ in Toronto. They really held it in high regard. Having always contemplated getting involved in preaching and ministering, my curiosity was piqued. Moises Velasco, a GLBC alumnus brought me to Waterloo and once I got to meet the church leaders and faculty, I was surprised by how warm, accommodating and helpful they were. They gave me the chance right away to enroll and be a part of the GLBC family. Almost two thirds into the semester, I can say that the quality of the teachers and the Theology program is second to none. The instructors are well versed and supremely knowledgeable in the respective classes they teach and are masterful, engaging and even downright poetic at times in their delivery. I am very happy and I feel blessed in having made acquaintances with Great Lakes, the local church and its members, and I have even decided to continue my studies there and make Waterloo my place of residence just for this reason. The passion they show, the love they have for God’s Word and the Gospel and their firm commitment in living a Christian and godly life has been an inspiration for me and I thank God and pray for their continued prosperity.

Third Year Student Insights By Ron Sampson

Having now gone to GLBC for almost two and a half years, I have learned a few things, including lessons about life, God, and the value of the book of Leviticus as it applies to the modern church. The simple things, eh? But one of the things that I have noticed most is this: change is hard. And real change? That can take a long time. But in those two and a half years, I have seen many changes in my classmates, but until this year, have been unable to see many deep changes in myself. I'm grateful for Great Lakes, and especially our teachers, Jim Holston, Dave Knutson and Geoff Ellis for facilitating my growth into someone better suited to the work of God.

Psalms “From Sea to Sea” By Jim Holston Each Monday evening we meet to study the wonderful book of Psalms. We are 29 students of God’s Word across four time zones “from sea to sea” (our national motto of Canada from Psalm 72:8). We are learning Psalms live online from the Atlantic and Pacific coasts (NB and BC), Ontario and Manitoba. Classes are recorded and shared online with all who couldn’t be present. Three of us are credit students. Paul Birston is teaching our class from the Central Time Zone in Winnipeg. Here are some comments for you from our class members:

“I appreciate the love of those who developed this method for building up their brothers and sisters in the Lord and for our course leader who has to work with many people over several time zones. I am in a poorly served internet region and this is a challenge for us. I have found a brother in Christ in a larger community within a hour's drive so we benefit by not only from the course but also in fellowship time studying online and encouraging one another. Hence the hidden gem in this course. As a side bar note; I am also keen on singing the Psalms and may I suggest that consulting a reliable Psalter and actually singing psalms will help us further discover the depth of what God has truly blessed us with!” (Richard)

we read through. I also enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and Paul’s own enthusiasm for the Psalms.” (Linda)

“The class of Psalms has really broadened my knowledge of how God works in different situations in our lives.” (Mike J.) “The psalms study has been a source of spiritual education and inspiration to me. I have learned so much about the literary aspects of biblical poetry, but more importantly, it has given me encouragement and motivation to seek a deeper faith and trust in God my Saviour, my Redeemer, my Rock and my Strength. It has also allowed me to locate many inspirational passages which I know will help me in times of troubles.” (Indra) “I appreciated the thoughts on waiting on God, particularly as we consider how much God has waited on us. I have a deeper appreciation for the Psalms than before.” (Kyle) “I really enjoyed the Psalms class. The class gave me a deeper insight to the Bible as a whole and complete message from God.” (Chris) Church group audit courses are a great way to grow in God’s Word and prepare us for further service with Him. If you would like to host a course from your congregation and reach out “from sea to sea” please contact Dave Knutson at GLBC ([email protected]).

“We are enjoying our Psalms class immensely. Learning about the different types of Psalms and how they are reflected in other Old and New Testament books. Also how Jesus is foreshadowed through King David is amazing. Love it!” (Darwin and Marge) “This class has increased my appreciation for the Psalms. It helps us see the awesomeness, providence, wisdom and love of God!” (Shawn) “I have developed a deeper appreciation of the Psalms since becoming involved in the Psalms class. We received several aids that help us gain more insight as

Good Things Come in Small Packages By Dave Knutson Every year when Christmas rolled around, I really hoped for something big. Big beats small every time. I had heard people say that ‘good things come in small packages’. I just didn’t believe it and sure hoped that no one would try it out on me. Well that was then and this is now...and while hockey sticks still do not compress, there are some things that do. Each year, Great Lakes Bible College offers a collection of short courses that skim the cream from the milk and serve it up in just one week. Short courses are like French Immersion – but without the French. Students are immersed in the core concepts of a streamlined study that’s better than a vacation. For one full week, you get away from it all, to dive into it all. It is refreshing and tiring all at the same time. Our students actually like it that way.

Here are the reflections of two students who participated in a course taught last summer in Weyburn, SK. “I really enjoyed the class. We covered a lot of material in a short time and it was both interesting and faith building. It was also a great time of fellowship with the other students and the Church in Weyburn. Definitely worth the seven hour drive from Calgary! I absolutely plan on attending next year. God Bless.” Mike Luzine "Major Doctrines in the History of Christian Thought was worth every moment and penny spent. Dave has the ability to make information useful and somehow come alive. Ellen and I plan on attending next year...Lord willing.” Earle Rattai The question is: what are you doing next summer? Why not join us for a short course? Invest your time, your mind and soul, to grow in wisdom, knowledge and ability.
