What I am seeing Alfalfa fields continue to advance quite quickly with the return of some warmer weather. Over the weekend we saw the alfalfa continue to gain close to one inch/day in new growth. In the fields that are over 17 inches in height the alfalfa has moved from the late vegetative stage to the early bud, although I need to mention that it was very early bud. The cool weather on Monday and Tuesday may slow the alfalfa but the long range outlook is for continued warmer temperatures which will rapidly move the alfalfa’s RFVs down towards the target of 170 for Hay Day. (See the May 25th report) Early bud is considered as1 to 2 nodes having visible buds. Buds may be hidden by leaves. To check for presence of buds pinch stem tip with fingers. Presence of a small, hard “ball” means that a bud is present. First C uttin g F ast Appro ach ing The warm temperatures this past week have stimulated growth of the hay crops in Mb.
