creating interdisciplinary culture
As perhaps the only profession that operates on a model of consistent critique, architecture presents a unique opportunity for students to find deeper meaning in the lessons taught within the academic context by creating their own platforms for criticism and curation. Creating such opportunities has manifested at the School of Architecture as a monthly colloquium series titled Common Ground organized, planned, and executed entirely by graduate students that invites instructors within the School to present “work students don’t know, from instructors they do”. The process of the colloquium’s creation not only facilitates deeper understandings of the environments with which faculty members engage, but has also served students as research into the critique and curation of prescient issues within design. Through this, students have engaged with a great diversity of ideas that may not have been presented within a classroom or studio context.

new forms of communication between students + faculty
From Common Ground has grown an eponymously titled publication, produced once per semester that serves as an artifact of deeper research into a specific theme and topic. The self-reflective theme of the inaugural volume, “Discourse”, has offered students the opportunity to research the impact that innovative, multi-media strategies for communicating about design can have on their own design tactics. The first issue, “Outreach”, interrogated architects’ abilities to effectively communicate their work and its value to those outside of the field, while the second, “Pedagogy”, has taken an introspective approach to analyzing processes of teaching design and the impact of the creation of a culture of critical thinking.
