Grow Up - Session 3: The Forgotten God June 19, 2016 The Role of the Holy Spirit in the Life of a Christian

Where’s the Power? Why is there such a big gap between what we reading Scripture about the Holy Spirit and how most believers and churches operate today? “The benchmark of success in church services has become more about attendance than the movement of the Holy Spirit.” (p. 15 of Forgotten God) / “Some people talk a lot about - even boast of - the Spirit, but their lives do not bear his fruit (p. 20 of Forgotten God). Key: That feeling that something is missing - is really a missing SOMEONE - the Holy Spirit! Yet - the Holy Spirit is the KEY player throughout the NT (Acts) • ROMANS 8:9b: Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

The Holy Spirit is a Person - He is God - Part of the Trinity - not a vague, impersonal force

• 1 Corinthians 2:11: For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. • What does this passage reveal about the Holy Spirit? (indicates he has an intellect, can comprehend)

• Romans 15:30: I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf… • What does this passage reveal about the Holy Spirit? (the Spirit loves, has emotion)

Read John 3:1-8 What does it mean to be “born of the Spirit”? “The moment you receive Christ, you are regenerated, indwelled, sealed, baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit. As a result, you have the potential to live a life of victory over sin and witness in the power of the Holy Spirit. This potential is released by faith as you surrender control of your life to him.”

Passages for consideration: • Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

• Ephesians 1:13-14: 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. • 2 Corinthians 5:5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. • 1 Corinthians 12:13: baptized into one body

What is the chief reason the Holy Spirit came? • John 16:14: He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you • So what will be a logical result when the Holy Spirit controls your life? What do the following passages tell us about the Holy Spirit (who he is)? • Romans 8:2: Spirit of freedom • John 16:13: Spirit of truth • John 16:14: glorifier of Jesus • Hebrews 10:29: Spirit of grace • Romans 1:4: Spirit of holiness • John 14:16: Helper, forever present in the life of the believer • John 14:26: Teacher, brings to remembrance words of Christ • 1 Corinthians 3:16: Indwells men • Acts 1:8: Gospel empowerer for witness What is the Holy Spirit doing in these passages? • Acts 13:2: Revealing leaders, who to be set apart for mission • Acts 8:29: Where to go in regard to mission (Philip) • Romans 8:14: Leads • John 16:7-8: Convicts the world regarding sin, righteousness and judgment • Romans 8:26-27: Helps in our weakness, intercedes for us according to God’s will • 2 Thessalonians 2:13: Sanctifier of men What does it mean to be “filled” with the Spirit? • Ephesians 5:18 (It’s a command! - in the Greek “keep on being filled” - continuous process) • What’s the difference between being indwelled and being filled by the Holy Spirit? • Read Galatians 5:16-17: 16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. • What is Paul’s battle in Romans 7:19-24? What is the solution? • What are some reasons we are NOT filled with the Spirit? • Don’t know/ obey God’s word (Psalm 119:105), Pride (Proverbs 16:28), Fear (Proverbs 29:25), Shame (Luke 9:26), Love of this world, desires of this world, (1 John 2:15-17); also LACK OF TRUST in God • Bottom line: We are unwilling to surrender our will to God (Lord’s prayer - YOUR WILL BE DONE!)

What character will be on display in our lives as a result of being filled? • Galatians 5:22-23 (fruit of the Spirit) • Side bar: Is the fruit of the Spirit the END GAME? or the means to the end (others knowing Jesus)? • Acts 1:8 (gospel power) In what areas of your life does the Holy Spirit NOT have control?
Are you willing to surrender your will to God? • Romans 12:1-2: 12 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

• How are we filled? Matthew 7:7-11, John 7:37-39 - WE ASK! (Heb. 11:6 - ask in faith)

Now what? 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 - Don’t be a consumer! How are you using your gifts to build up the body of Christ and to reach the lost? Gospel Transformation: 2 Corinthians 3:18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord,[a] are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

• Be accountable: confess sin (1 John 1:9) / Romans 8:13: put to death the deeds of the flesh • Ephesians 4:25-32: How do we grieve the Spirit? • Role of prayer, God’s word, obedience, witness
