Language Program Updates
MAP TESTING It's a great time to be at St. Louis Language Immersion School. Our students are in the midst of taking the all important Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) tests. These tests are required by state law as part of the " Outstanding Schools Act ," the state schoolreform law enacted by the legislature in 1993. This law required the State Board of Education to adopt academic performance standards, which established the knowledge, skills and competencies necessary for students to "successfully advance through the public elementary and secondary education system of this state; lead to or qualify a student for high school graduation; and prepare students for postsecondary education or the workplace or both." Your child's results will be sent to you in the fall after the test was given. The test is scored (or graded) according to four achievement levels: Below Basic, Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. Missouri's goal is to help students reach the top two categories. The University of Missouri St. Louis has a vested interest in our results as they are the sponsor for SLLIS. Improved scores are an integral piece of our future as an organization. Please make sure your children are "pumped and ready" for the tests. END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR The last day of school for the Kindergarten through Seventh Grade is Friday, June 1. Our graduates last day of school is Thursday May 31. Although the days are being counted down we have a lot of work yet to accomplish. Please make sure your children are to school on time, and ready to learn.

The Chinese program students had a wonderful experience in this spring by creating their own classbook. Each and every student gets at least one page of the book to write and draw in both Chinese and English, the book will be published in following weeks. We encourage parents to order them online once your teachers give you the barcode. Higher grades are having their annual MAP test, and so far they are doing a great job. Some students participated in the dance at MO Botanical Garden annual Chinese Culture Day representing SLLIS. May is Asian Heritage Month in the US, students will celebrate with their teachers and overseas interns with more authentic cultural activities and learning in May. Many of our students also addressed that they are very happy seeing North and South Korean leaders shake their hands at the DMZ. We hope peace to every corner of the world.
Spanish by Ana Lopez, TSP Language and Culture Teacher Leader Cinco de Mayo Festival and parade was a complete success! Thank you so much to all staff, parents and students who participated and made this day an amazing, fun and enjoyable one. We were able to get many signatures seeking more information about the school and all our SLLIS kids who went to the festival had the opportunity to enjoy the Kid’s Zone. It sure takes a lot of support to make an event like this work, we couldn’t have been able to do it without your help. Muchas gracias.
French by Coumba Gueye, TFP Language and Culture Teacher Leader Can you believe in less than just 45 days our French 5th graders will be having the opportunity to open themselves to a new world? Mme. Sabrina has dedicated her time to making sure all students are ready before heading to France. She has started an after school culture class every Monday for the rest of the school year. They are many activities included but not limited to: packing for a trip, learning the history of the places students will visit, French cuisine, manner of speaking, savoirvivre, and practicing their target language. Is this not a good way of combating cultural shock? In addition, The French Program is looking forward to celebrating Cinco de Mayo with The Spanish Program. Please come out to join us at the parade!

PBIS Corner Greetings from your PBIS cochairs! We are Raul Muñoz, 5th grade teacher at Papin and Kari Rivers, kindergarten teacher at Marine. PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. It is a school wide program that teaches and promotes positive behavior with universal expectations for all students. To learn more about PBIS, you can visit: w ww.pbis.org . We are excited to teach parents more about what PBIS looks like at school and how you can support PBIS at home. GRADUATION Save The Date May 31 7:00 PM at Lutheran High School North As we enter the month of May our Eighth Graders are very excited as graduation is around the corner. Our 18 Eighth Graders representing the French and Spanish School are gearing up for their educational experience beyond SLLIS. Not all decisions have been made, yet as for now we have graduates entering Lutheran High School North, Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience, Lift for Life, Miller Career Academy and Rittenour. Way to go graduates!
