Rationale The children will be learning about Ancient Rome through evidence in the environment and through artefacts and pictures. They will recognise that archaeologists learn about the past from the evidence that is left behind. History Find out about the effects of Roman settlement in Great Britain from printed sources, pictures and photographs. Recognise that the past is represented in different ways e.g. written, pictures, artefacts, and give reasons for this. To ask, research and answer their own questions on a historical topic, and select the appropriate sources to research from a selection provided by the teacher.

Art The roles and purposes of artists, craftspeople and designers working in Ancient Rome. Observe and produce pattern and still life in their own mosaics. Record first hand observations of mosaics.

English Phase 1: Compare a range of myths; analyse a quest myth, identifying the text structure and language features. Phase 2: Identify how settings impact on events in a quest myth; create an interactive story map to support planning a quest myth; use oral storytelling to plan a quest myth. Phase 3: Children write their own quest myth incorporating settings that provide a challenge and settings with characters that support the main character.

Computing Use a paint package to create Mosaic designs on screen. Use the internet to identify sources of evidence and evaluate them.

DT Understand seasonality, prepare and cook mainly savoury dishes. Tool box skills Independence Ask questions to further their understanding. Take responsibility to solve problems. Be organised and self motivated. Collaborating Work in small groups to complete tasks. Learn to assign roles and take responsibility. Perseverance Use learning resources and taught strategies to meet new challenges. Reflection Help evaluate the learning of peers and make suggestions about how to develop the topic.

Home Learning project The children will dress in Roman costumes and in role they will attend a ‘Roman Style Banquet’ with food and entertainment, that they have researched, planned and prepared as part of their home learning and class activities. (11/1/16)

This half term, Autumn Class will be learning about the Ancient Romans The children will be learning about Ancient Rome through evidence in the environment and through artefacts and pictures. They will recognise that archaeologists learn about the past from the evidence that is left behind Read and write Roman myth quests.

Look at Roman Armour and find out about Roman soldiers.

Learn about the legacies of the Ancient Romans.

Learn about key figures such as Boudicca and Julius Caesar.

Autumn Class’ Home Learning Project Design and make your own armour/clothing to wear at our Roman Banquet.

The banquet will comprise of some simple Roman snacks that the children will have researched during the topic (although we will not be eating stuffed dormice) and the children will provide their own entertainment; performing their Roman myths.

The Roman Banquet will be held on the afternoon of Monday 11th January 2016. Costumes can be worn all day but some extra clothing could be brought to keep the children warm at break time.
