East Court Cross Country 2016 by Joshua Scott (5SD) and James Polton (4JM) On Sunday 9th October 2016, Halsford Park School competed in the annual cross country event at East Court. Halsford Park had a total of 45 people racing overall. The races were spilt into two (girls' and boys' race). The first 4 girls and 4 boys, of each school, counted towards the team event. In the girls' race, Emma Kilfiger (4th), Hannah Religioso (8th),Comfort Wallis (10th) and Katya Kashubina (19th) were out first 4 girls to complete the course. Our overall score meant that we won the girls' team event, which was the first time since 2004. Well done girls! In the boys' race, our first 4 home were Oscar Read (6th), Joshua Scott (8th), Alex Tidy (10th) and Leo Kilfiger (13th). Overall this meant our boys' team came second overall (coming second to a very, very strong Ardingly College team). The first 20 girls and 20 boys from each race qualify for the Mid Sussex race at East Court. Provisionally, we have 16 children who have qualified for this race. We wish them luck for the next round. Well done to all the children who took part. All the children should be proud of their achievements.

Netball 6 children from Year 5 and 6 took part in the first round of our netball league this year. The children all played amazingly and many goals were scored. Well done to all the children who took part in these matches. We drew both of our first two games. We scored 2-2 against Copthorne and 3-3 against Turners Hill. We have a few more games to play in our league and wish all children continued success in the next few matches Early Years After half term we are going to be looking at the story of Stanley's Stick and exploring the text through role play and writing. We will continue to learn our sounds and be using these more in our mark making and writing. In our Maths work we will be learning about adding and then moving on to patterns. We will be having a pattern day on Wednesday 9th November where we would like the children to wear something patterned. This can be stripes, spots or any other kind of pattern! Please continue to join us every Friday from 2.45pm for Friday Phonics!

Year 1 Next half term Year 1 will be starting a new learning experience called 'Hello, I'm new here'. This experience is Geography focused and the children will be learning to devise simple routes around the school, follow instructions and find out about different countries and cultures. In Maths we will be learning about odd and even numbers and then moving on to 2D and 3D shapes. We will be continuing to practise our phonics sounds and the first phonics afternoon will be on Friday 4th November at 2:30. We hope you are finding these sessions helpful, if there is anything specific you would like us to cover please let Miss Myles or Mrs Cheeseman know Year 2 We have thoroughly enjoyed our ‘Party Planners’ experience this half term. We had a wonderful day when we worked together to prepare healthy party food. We particularly enjoyed eating it! Overall, we have worked very hard and are looking forward to our next experience ‘Pride in Place’ where we will be learning about local History and Geography. We will start by thinking about the Great Fire of London and comparing houses at the time to the houses we live in now. This will guide our Reading and Writing lessons. In Maths we will continue our learning about time whilst keeping a focus on the four operations and arithmetic skills. Year 3 In Year 3 we have completed our experience: Bright Sparks!” We have produced some writing of excellent quality about thunderstorms and in science we can explain how circuits work. Next half term we will be beginning an experience called: “Who were the greatest builders in the world?” This will be an opportunity to learn about Ancient Egypt and the impact that this civilisation has had on our lives today. We will be beginning to learn our four times table after half term as the children have made good progress this half term with their threes. Year 4 Next term our Experience looks at some of the ancient civilisations that have shaped our country. Children will research the impact made by Celts, Vikings, Romans and Saxons. In Literacy we will be studying Beowulf. Children will continue to consolidate the punctuation and grammar they have been learning. Spellings will continue to come home daily. In Maths we will be using efficient written methods for multiplication and division, applying these skills to real life contexts. Year 5 Under Siege - Why would someone build a castle here? What has World War One got to do with castles? We will be learning about how the United Kingdom has been shaped by important historical events. We will begin by looking at the Bayeux Tapestry and thinking about what this tapestry can tell us about the Battle of Hastings. Having discussed how battles begin, we will then learn about the beginning of World War One. Perhaps over half-term, you can find out about the famous battle which took place in Pevensey and/or visit the Imperial War Museum in London. In Maths we will be focusing on efficient methods for long multiplication and short division. In Literacy we will be researching why the two wars began and use this to write a non-fiction report. In PE we will be focusing on different ways to balance and travel in gymnastics as well as balls skills in netball. Year 6 In the first week, Year 6 will using BODMAS to help them recognise the order of operations. Following on from this they will be naming and writing equivalent fractions before applying their knowledge of common factors to simplify fractions. In Literacy, pupils will be looking at instruction texts. They will focus on their use of grammar by including a range of punctuation such as colons, semi-colons, dashes and bullet points. The pupils will then look at different time periods in history, researching significant events and people.

Staff Leaving We are sadly saying a farewell to Mrs Gooch, our School Secretary, who has worked at Halsford Park for the last 7½ years. Mrs Gooch will be leaving us at the end of this half term and taking up a new post at another school. We wish her well and thank her for all her hard work and dedication to our school. Parent Volunteers: We are currently revising our Parent Volunteer protocol and procedures in line with Safeguarding procedures that are under constant review. Whilst we undertake this, we would like to ask any parents that are interested in volunteering, to express an interest by email to the main office ([email protected]/ [email protected]). Please indicate the frequency and days to which you would be able to commit your much appreciated time. Once the protocol and procedures have been finalised, we will be in touch with potential volunteers during the second half of the Autumn Term.

Class Cover Supervisors Over time we have been listening to parents and class teachers about the varying quality of supply teachers. Some of our regular supply teachers do an excellent job, however some agency cover can be less effective as they do not know our school systems and policies. On discussion with other local head teachers about what cover arrangements they have in place we have decided to ask some of our most experienced Teaching Assistants to occasionally cover classes for periods of time during the school day as Cover Supervisors. In the event a teacher is absent for more than 2 days, we will employ a qualified teacher. We believe our Cover Supervisors are well placed to cover the class as they have built up relationships with the children and understand our Behaviour for Learning Policy. Class teachers will always plan the lessons for the Cover Supervisors and take responsibility for assessments after the lesson. In addition to the learning and welfare benefits to our children it will also enable us to save some costs and provide professional development opportunities for our Teaching Assistants that may wish to go onto Higher Level Teaching Assistant Status, or consider teaching in the future. SEND Forum Notes for your diary: The SEND Forum at Halsford Park will take place on Thursday 1st December from 9am to 10am. Baldwins Hill SEND Forum will take place on Friday 2nd December from 9.45am to 10.45am. These forums provide a supportive network for parents with children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. If you are interested in attending these forums, they are completely inclusive and all parents are welcome. If you are a Halsford Park Parent who cannot make the date, then do please come to the Baldwins Hill one instead! Our aim is to offer 2 dates at 2 venues, not to be exclusive to that particular school!
