Hanarry Hurricanes 2015 Junior Coach Expectations Please read through these carefully before applying to be a Junior Coach. I, Laurel Chirstopher (head coach), reserve the right to add onto these expectations, as I feel necessary. 1.) BEHAVIOR a. You will be expected to take instruction from Coach Laurel and/or Coach David Petmecky (assistant head coach). Insubordination will not be tolerated. Bad attitudes will not be acceptable. If either of us finds your attitude to be an issue, you will be removed from this position immediately. 2.) ATTENDANCE POLICY: a. You will be expected to be at every 6 & Under practice. If you plan on being absent, I will need to notify me immediately and you must have a substitute junior coach planned to take your shift. Another junior coach will not take double the amount of swimmers during their own shift. If a substitute junior coach is unavailable, and you are not at your shift, you may be removed from your position. Your attendance is vital and important to me and Coach David, the parents/guardians, and most of all, the swimmers. The swimmers count on you for their training so please, be present and punctual. 3.) PRACTICE: a. Teach your 4/5 swimmers proper steps to begin to swim or to improve their strokes. We have a huge range of swimmers from not ever being in the water to being able to swim the whole pool. It will be your responsibility to discern what they need to learn in order for them to improve throughout the season. You will need to be adaptable and able to teach different skill levels. b. If you are having problems teaching a stroke or the fundamentals, you will need to notify me immediately so that we can discuss and correct any methods of training. If you would like to work on diving with your swimmers, please reserve this for Wednesdays, and only for 10 minutes at the end of practice. 4.) COMMUNICATION: a. Proper communication with swimmers, parents/guardians, and other coaches will be expected. b. You will need to know how to speak with young children, how to be encouraging, and how to enforce assertive discipline when needed. There will be times that you will have to communicate with parents about their child. c. I recommend open communication with parents. Tell parents/guardians if their child is doing well and improving. Children and parents/guardians love to hear this! Do not hesitate to give parents/guardians suggestions about how they can help their child to improve. It could be as simple as telling them to practice blowing bubbles in the bathtub. Please let you parents/guardians know that the more that their swimmer practices the more they will continue to improve.

d. Please communicate any issues, concerns, availability, and skill level of your swimmer with me at [email protected]. It is incredibly helpful to have all this information in one spot when we are seeding the meets. This email is checked daily over the swim season. Quick questions may be addressed after practice. 5.) MEETS: a. When it comes to meets, it can and will get hectic. In order to make this smoother, please help with the following:  Check with your swimmer’s parent/guardian to see if your swimmer will be attending the meet. This will need to be talked about a week in advance.  Please specify if your swimmers need to be assisted or not. *Let me know these things via email as soon as you know. b. During the meet:  You will be responsible for your swimmers specifically, but more generally for ALL 6 & Unders during the swim meets.  You may be asked to swim with an exhibition swimmer, even he/she is not your own swimmer that you coach regularly.  You will be expected to cheer on all 6 & Under swimmers while they are competing, and if possible, be at the other end of the lane to see them finish. This means the world to them!  You will be expected to stay with your swimmers if they are placed on relays.  If your swimmer is not swimming, I will ask that you check with, possibly stand with, the 7-8 year olds, and the 9-10 year olds relays, especially on the far side of the pool. They too need the encouragement, the organization of lane assignments, and relay order. Overall, I expect you to have a positive and respectful attitude towards your swimmers, their parents/guardians, other coaches, and to the team as a whole. It is vital that you have not only a love for the sport, but also to see this team be the best it can possibly be, which means investing well into our young swimmers. Teaching and coaching young swimmers is a rewarding experience and a huge responsibility. You will have the privilege of being a huge role model in these young swimmers’ lives. Don’t take that lightly. I will expect you to exemplify a positive and respectful attitude on a consistent and regular basis (i.e. your own practices, meets, etc.). If you have any questions, feel free to contact me via email at [email protected])
