Happy Christmas Ever yone! Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Sixth Sense. At the end of a very long term it is very rewarding to look back on a time that has been incredibly busy and very challenging whilst also being very rewarding. As a College we continue to make great progress on many levels both students and staff alike. Work has already begun on meeting prospective students and parents, and applications are coming into college thick and fast. We have interviewed over 80 students with many already securing their place for September 2016. We continue to look at different ways of engaging with potential

students and will be offering subject Taster Sessions throughout January and February. Please contact Carolyn Day day.c@trinitycatholiccollege. org.uk if you would like to book a place or for further details. This is a great way to meet potential students, allowing them to experience lessons whilst having the opportunity to sample college life generally here at Trinity. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all students and staff for the huge effort and commitment shown throughout the term and thank all parents for their continued support.

Have a well deserved rest, enjoy the time with your families, re-charge your batteries and let’s be ready for a very busy productive and successful 2016. Have a Merry and Peaceful Christmas and a very prosperous New Year. Best wishes as always

John McCarthy visits Trinity

O

n Friday 23rd October staff and governors from ten Catholic primary schools joined with staff and governors from Trinity for a shared professional development day to celebrate the opening of St Hilda's Catholic Academy Trust. Proceedings started with Holy Mass at St Mary's Cathedral in Coulby Newham. This was followed by inputs from guests speakers on understanding the new OFSTED framework and opportunities for teachers from different schools to share best practice. The event ended with an inspirational talk from John McCarthy who took the audience through the full range of emotions with stories and recollections of his time in captivity.

St Hilda All we know about Hilda's original convent is that it was on the north bank of the River Wear. Her next appointment was as the second Abbess of Hartlepool Abbey. Hilda founded Whitby Abbey in 657, and she remained there until her death in 680. There is archaeological evidence to show that her monastery was in the Celtic style: its members lived in small houses for two or three people. Whitby was a double monastery, like Hartlepool, where men and women lived apart but worshipped in church together. Hilda is described by Bede as having great energy and being a skilled administrator and teacher. Caedmon was a cowherd at the monastery who was inspired in a dream to sing verses in praise of God and Hilda recognised his gift and encouraged him to develop it. Kings might have sought her advice but she cared deeply for ordinary people. 3

erry Christmas Everyone! I cannot believe this year is almost over. From Lucy Nassau’s karaoke to Oktober Fest’s cha cha slide, it has been a busy one! As we say goodbye to 2015, we have some exciting events coming up. But just before I let you in on that … I hope the Year 12s are enjoying Sixth form and I hope the Year 13s have all survived UCAS and received the offers which they all deserve! We have many upcoming events to look forward to, with Christmas Jumper Day, the big quiz and the Christmas party all taking place on the 18th December. I am hoping it will be a success. I have some big plans for next year, including the highly demanded change machine! On behalf of the Vice Presidents, the Student Help Board will also be up and running soon; this will allow students to communicate and help one another. I am also planning to organise various fundraising events from cake sales to bingo to kickstart 2016.

If anyone has any suggestions please email me or come find me around college, I will be happy to help. I hope everyone has a brilliant Christmas and a happy new year.

Bridie

For later on in the year I also have exciting plans for Easter, Summer and sadly Year 13 leavers’ day. I would also like to produce a Year 13 leavers’ book, as suggested by Reece, as I think this would be an ideal way to remember our time at Trinity.

Every year, the people of the UK watch lots of television around the holiday season, but in between those programmes there are adverts. Some are passable for the season, whereas others leave a lasting impression. This year it’s no different. Chances are, you’ve already seen many of the festive-themed adverts on television, and many people have already picked their favourites. I’m going to go through my top 8 favourite Christmas adverts for this year (if it has appeared on television this year, it counts). Without further ado, let’s start the countdown at number 8:

Sky Movies have redone the ‘Step into the Adventure’ ad this year, featuring the newest films on Sky. It’s just as fun this year, showing the worlds of films such as Big Hero 6, Cinderella and Avengers: Age of Ultron. I do think it worked better last year with more animated films to ‘adapt’ the characters into.

A pioneer of Christmas adverts, I expected a lot from John Lewis. This year’s ad is a touching tale with a relatable aspect of the loneliness of the elderly. It’s a nice metaphor, and it is carried out well, with a good soundtrack. However, I must say I preferred their ads from last year and the year before.

Sainsburys use a classic book character this year to front their holiday campaign: a cat named Mog. It shows a humorous approach at first, with Mog’s antics in the kitchen, but becomes more touching near the end. It does well to blend both of these aspects. 6

Very uses its logo to its advantage, by making the stars of their newest advert boxes: hundreds of pink boxes heading out to homes across the nation. I definitely enjoyed the advert, as it has a good build-up to the end. However, I felt it could have shown more products that it sold. Otherwise, a great effort from Very.

This advert is both adventurous and purposeful, resulting in a ski slope full of skiers delivering presents down a steep gradient. You see many of Argos’ products, as well as getting that sense of fantasy that makes Christmas extra fun. Argos have upped their game after last year’s not-so-amazing advert, and I’m pleased.

Not just one, but a series of adverts from the merged Currys and PC World stores. This series revolves around the witty premise of getting presents you don’t want and, with the help of actor Jeff Goldblum, acting like it’s something you do want. It’s a creative idea that is humorously relatable (after all, we’ve all been there).

I know this has been going around for a long time, but since it has aired this year, it does count. The sight of the Coca Cola trucks is iconic, and to many people heralds the start of Christmas. It still has lasting power to this day, and it ensures that ‘holidays are coming’ is stuck firmly in your head—and successfully.

From my first viewing of this, I was living for it. This ad shows a selection of perspectives of Christmas in a more irreverent style, which is massively refreshing. The quick-fire nature of the ad and addictive soundtrack courtesy of X Factor’s Fleur East puts this advert at the top of my list this year. 7

The Top Ten Highest Grossing Christmas Films of All Time

There’s nothing better than watching a Christmas film at this festive time of year, so here are the top ten highest grossing Christmas films of all time. See if your favourite made the cut!

The Santa Clause 2

Released in 2002, The Santa Clause 2 is the second movie in The Santa Clause franchise. Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) has played the role of Santa Clause for 8 years, but his world turns upside down when he discovers he must marry by Christmas Eve or he will stop being Santa forever. He is also delivered some even worse news - his son, Charlie, has been placed on the Naughty List and it is up to him to set things right.

The Santa Clause

After accidentally killing a man in a Santa suit on Christmas Eve, Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) and his son (Eric Lloyd) are magically transported to the North Pole, where Scott is told he must take Santa’s place before next Christmas arrives. He believes he is dreaming, but over the next few months he grows a notable white beard and gains weight, revealing that maybe it wasn’t a dream at all.

Elf Buddy (Will Ferrell) is not the typical elf. Having been caught up in Santa’s sack as a baby when he visited his orphanage, Buddy joins in at the North Pole, making presents and flying the sleigh … or at least trying to. When he discovers Papa Elf is not his real father, he goes on a quest to America to find his real dad, saving Christmas along the way.

Die Hard 2: Die Harder

A year after his heroics in L.A, detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) finds himself mixed up in yet another terrorist plot, this time at Washington Dulles International Airport, where he is waiting for his wife (Bonnie Bedelia). That same night, South American politico and drug profiteer Ramon Esperanza (Franco Nero) is arriving in U.S. custody. McClane takes action when a treasonous ex-colonel (William Sadler) seizes control of the airport, threatening to crash every inbound flight. 8

Love Actually

Following nine intertwined love stories, Love Actually explores the obstacles and complexities of relationships, including famous faces such as Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley and Emma Thompson. This Christmas romance provides plenty of laughs, and some tears, proving the power of love for all people of all ages, especially at Christmas time.

The Polar Express

The Polar Express tells the tale of a non-believing boy’s magical journey to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. During this journey, he receives an extraordinary gift and discovers that maybe Santa does exist after all.

A Christmas Carol

Based on the traditional tale written by Charles Dickens, Disney’s A Christmas Carol is one of the most recent film adaptations of the novel. Though London awaits Christmas with excitement, miserable Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) thinks it’s all “humbug”, criticising his faithful clerk and merry nephew for their festive spirit. After encountering the ghost of his late business partner, Marley, Scrooge is taken on a journey through his past, present and future in the hope he will amend his bitter ways.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas How The Grinch Stole Christmas is a live action adaptation of Dr Seuss’s famous children’s tale of the reclusive green Grinch, played by Jim Carrey in this version. Joined by his unlucky dog, Max, The Grinch tries to ruin Christmas for the entirety of Whoville, sneaking down from his mountaintop home to swipe away the Who’s gifts and festive cheer. However, not all goes to plan as the Grinch meets the adorable Cindy-Lou Who( Taylor Momsen).

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York Probably the only successful sequel in the Home Alone film franchise, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York tells the tale of witty youngster, Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin), who loses track of his father and mistakenly takes a plane to New York City, while his family fly to Florida. All alone in NYC, Kevin finds himself a room in the Plaza Hotel, beginning his usual antics, until he discovers some familiar faces are on the loose right around the corner, trying to rob an elderly man’s toy store.

Home Alone

By the time it had run its course in theatres, Home Alone was the third highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, falling behind only Star Wars and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. In total, its cinema run grossed $477,561,243. Loveable child star, Macaulay Culkin, plays the role of Kevin McCallister, who is left home alone at Christmas while his family go on vacation, finding the Wet Bandits are trying to rob his house. 9

Every year we come across the same problem, how to make ‘the Christmas jumper’ look good? And I have finally discovered that the answer is: opt for ‘the stylish one'. This is the jumper that is not only festive but makes you look like the Christmas season was made just for you and your outfit. In fact most people will envy you because of this jumper and you will certainly not be ashamed to go out in public this holiday. All

cool (as, let’s be honest, not many Christmas jumpers can be classed as ‘cool') are a serious problem for the rest of us who are still trying to figure out how to look good whilst keeping warm at the same time. Which sounds much easier than it actually is.

We all know Christmas time is going to empty our bank accounts because of all the presents we have to buy for our friends and family and buying a Christmas jumper can just be another expense to add to the list. Which is why ‘the cheap one’ is perfect for people like us: college students with no money. We don’t want to miss out on the fun Christmas tradition of a Christmas jumper just because they’re “too expensive" so this Christmas jumper is the way to make it work. Christmas jumpers also only make a special appearance once a year which is

why it may seem pointless spending a lot of money on a wardrobe tuck-away. This season Boohoo has some of the cheapest deals on Christmas jumpers so if this is the Christmas jumper you’re going for then Boohoo is the place to look.

The people who wear this jumper are usually not shy at all. The spotlight is not something they hide from. For this type of jumper, unlike the others, the crazier the better. The people who work ‘the OTT one’ are usually the people who put their Christmas tree up at the start of November as they cannot possibly wait for Christmas to come around again and they wear this Christmas pride literally on their sleeve. If you are looking for a jumper as out there and crazy as these from Asos

and sharing your fun-filled Christmas spirit with the rest of us, who compared to you might as well be the Grinch. The OTT Christmas jumper isn’t for everyone which is very understandable as not all of us love being the centre of attention. But for those of you who still want to give your outfit that festive flair then this is the Christmas jumper for you. You can still successfully pass as being in the Christmas spirit without looking like you’ve just escaped from Santa’s workshop. This jumper is perfect for pairing with your everyday outfits and still keeping you warm. Many of these jumpers also appear in sweatshirt form like these two from Boohoo and Topshop so if you want to avoid the

knitwear completely as that really isn’t your thing then the subtle sweatshirt is the way to go.

This jumper is for all you daring people who aren't afraid to be on the naughty list this Christmas. The ‘inappropriate one’ is the jumper that people usually avoid as Christmas time, however, it’s taking a leap in the fashion world and becoming more and more popular. If you are willing to risk it this season and go for something a bit more unconventional then the ‘inappropriate’ jumper is the one for you. Just make sure not to wear it around your sweet innocent grandma ...
