Happy Father’s Day Have you ever wondered who came up with Father’s Day? Most historians consider Sonora Smart Dodd, of Washington State, the first person to think up the holiday in 1910. Sonora’s father, William, was a Civil War veteran. Her mother died in childbirth making William a widower with five children to raise on his own. After Sonora married and started her family, she realized the tremendous job her father had done in raising her and her siblings as a single parent. Sonora’s pastor gave a sermon about Mother’s Day shortly after that holiday was established and she suggested that there should also be a Father’s Day. She asked her pastor if he would present a sermon about having Father’s Day on June 3 which happened to be her father’s birthday. The pastor felt he didn’t have enough time to prepare and didn’t want to preach about a Father’s Day until June 19 which happened to be the third Sunday of June. Sonora spent years promoting making Father’s Day a national holiday. She went to manufacturers of men’s goods asking them to promote a day for fathers. In 1938, A Father’s Day Council was founded by the New York Associated Men’s Wear Retailers to help with the commercial promotion of Father’s Day. The public was resistant to the idea. It was felt that having a Father’s Day would be just another way for retailers to make money. In 1913, several bills were submitted to Congress to pass the national recognition of Father’s Day. President Woodrow Wilson heavily promoted making Father’s Day official in 1916 but couldn’t get enough support to get it passed by Congress. President Calvin Coolidge recommended that Father’s Day be observed by the nation in 1924 but he didn’t go so far as to issue a national proclamation. In 1957, Senator Margaret Chase Smith of Maine wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus “singling out just one of our two parents”. Finally, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation making the third Sunday in June, Father’s Day. President Richard Nixon, in 1972, made Father’s Day a permanent national holiday. According to a Fox News report, “About 87 percent of dads would rather have dinner with the family than a tie, a bottle of cologne, or something for his car. Just a word to the wise!
Missions Corner Can you believe it? After all the spring cleaning, the cupboard is bare. I mean – bone bare, especially bars of soap and toothpaste. There are plenty of toothbrushes but they are of no use without something to put on them. Bags of personal products will be going to the residents of four recovery homes in June. It is always nice to be able to include the very basic items: toothpaste and brush, body or hand lotion, shampoo, deodorant and any other item you might think would be of use. This ministry has been going on for at least ten years now and the most wonderful surprises appear on the table in the Senior Women’s Sunday School Room. Sometimes there will be bottles of shampoo and another time it will be pretty bottles of body lotion. You just never know. I’m sure the Lord sees and blesses this ministry and those who have been so faithful in providing items for the bags. Sometimes saying thank you seems to be a small thing but they are mighty words and carry many thoughts of caring and thanksgiving. As always, any items can be left on the wonderful table in the Women’s Sunday School Room and know that anything is greatly appreciated. God does love a cheerful giver and so do I! Blessings, Mother Hubbard

He never looks for praises He’s never one to boast He just goes on quietly working For those he loves the most His dreams are seldom spoken His wants are very few And most of the time his worries Will go unspoken too He’s there…..A firm foundation Through all our storms of life A sturdy hand to hold to In times of stress and strife A true friend we can turn to When times are good or bad One of our greatest blessings, The man that we call Dad.

June is Local Missions month. We have multiple options for supporting local ministries this month: Baby bottles can be filled with spare change (or bills or checks) to support New Life Pregnancy Center. Empty bottles can be picked up on the back table in the sanctuary and returned there (whether completely full or not) by June 30th. Last year our baby bottle gifts added up to over $300 to support this ministry. Offerings marked as Missions on your envelopes this month will be split between two special ministries of our Sacramento Region Baptist Network: Migrant Ministries and Church Planting. Both ministries can use all the help we can give, because the needs are great and the available funding is minimal.
