The student-athlete may not have participated in more than 3 contests or dates of competition or 30 percent of the team's completed contests/dates of competition which ever number is greater (round up any decimal, ex. 41 games x .3 = 12.3 {round up any decimal} = 13). The injury or illness must occur prior to the first competition of the second half of the season. The injury or illness does not have to occur during practice/competition, but it must be incapacitating. Appropriate and contemporaneous medical documentation must exist throughout the injury and must be provided for the waiver application.
Keep in Mind Eligibility Clock Implications: Even if a SA Redshirts* one year and receives a Medical Hardship Wavier the next year, the SA is still under a 5 year eligibility clock (i.e. 3 years of eligibility remaining in his or her 5 year clock). Only if the SA receives a second Medical Hardship Waiver can the 5 year clock be extended to 6 years (i.e. 3 years of eligibility remaining in his or her 6 year clock). *the NCAA does not consider a redshirt beyond an SA’s control.

Hypo: Starv'n Marvin is a current student athlete from out of state. A University booster named Charity Gooddeed invites Starv’n over to her house for thanksgiving dinner. Charity arranges for Starv’n to be pickup at the dorms that night. Charity welcomes Starv’n to her estate and immediately begins the seven course meal. During dinner, Starv’n becomes lonely for his family and Charity allows him to use her cell phone to call his parents. After several helpings of turkey, Starv’n is overcome by the high concentration of tryptophan and Charity offers Starv’n her spare bedroom for the night. Possible Violations: Meal- Compliance and Head Coach must pre-approve. Transportation- OK, so long as it is reasonable local transportation.
