Since most of the district’s area of concern regarded nutrition, she advised that discussing further goals and interventions according to the SHI should be held off until the updated regulations are released. She did review it and stated that it was incomplete. Nurse Crews then informed her that not all staff knows what the SHI is, and this factor contributed to the SHI not being completed in certain areas. She explained that the school district’s SHI will be available on this system and the state will be able to see who is in compliance as well as doing school audits. the committee about educating all members and staff regarding the SHI and its importance to the district. She stated that she will also educate staff on how it is supposed to be filled out to clear up any misunderstanding. Mrs. Shatley informed the committee that she would schedule a meeting to talk with Walt Pigott, HGSD Superintendent regarding this and the new upcoming regulations and requirements. Mrs. Shatley also stated that she would review district Wellness Policy and assist district with meeting all new requirements and regulations. She explained that the district is required to have at least 4 meetings per year. Martha Barkhimer, HG Dietary Manager, asked Mrs. Shatley what exactly was required of the Wellness Committee according to the regulations since, in the past, there has been a bit of confusion. Mrs. Shatley stated that the committee should be reviewing the food menus. Mrs. Barkhimer informed her that this is being done. Mrs. Shatley stated that there was much more than just reviewing menus, but she would discuss that further when she met to educate staff. Nurse Crews voiced concerns about lack of attendance by members of committee and motivation on behalf of Sparkman staff on committee. Todd Lewis, SES/SHS Principal stated that Sparkman campus is 25 miles away and it is hard for staff to get here due to shortage and time as a result of having to be back for those members to drive a school bus. Mr. Lewis suggested that Wellness meetings be zoomed which can be done from the computer. Nurse Crews agreed that this would be a better way to catch everyone and getting everyone to the meetings. Nurse Crews informed the committee that she would talk with Mr. Pigott and get this set up for meeting convenience. Committee discussed required members for committee. Mr. Lewis stated that he would represent Sparkman campus and would relay any information. Mrs. Shatley explained that a student from Sparkman also must be on the committee. Mr. Lewis stated that this would not be a problem. Mrs. Shatley then briefly touched on School-Based Health Centers. She asked if the district had considered this at all. Mr. Lewis stated that he has actually worked for a school previously that had one and it was a wonderful project. Nurse Crews explained that being in this small community with lack of medical supervision due to doctors and nurse practitioners unavailable, the school district was concerned that eventually the cost would fall on the school if it did not succeed for this reason. Mrs. Shatley stated that she would talk in depth more on this with Mr. Pigott when she met with him. Mrs. Shatley inquired about how many LEA’s the district has. Nurse Crews told her 1 LEA number. Mr. Lewis then explained that the LEA number had 4 building numbers attached to it. Mrs. Shatley explained that there has to be a building wellness HARMONY GROVE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER

committee per LEA, but she wasn’t sure about this situation since there was 1 LEA with 4 building numbers attached. She explained that she would consult someone else to clarify and would advise the district afterwards. Finally, Nurse Crews touched briefly on pregnancy concerns of one of the students. Nurse Crews informed her that this particular student inquired about having a class that taught students the realities of having a baby since so many students are sexually active. Nurse Crews also informed her that she put together a program several years back that was approved, but never came to fruition due to cost. Mr. Lewis informed committee that this is being done at many other schools and is a great learning tool. He also informed committee that the babies used for such a program can be leased for very cheap. Mrs. Shatley stated that this was definitely a good idea to not only teach about teenage pregnancy, but also the disease consequences of unprotected sex since Ouachita County was among the top highest for STD’s. Nurse Crews explained that she would look into this some more and discuss it with Mr. Pigott. Nurse Crews set next meeting for March 29, 2016. Meeting closed by Nurse Crews at this time and members adjourned.
