Harris Teeter, Fort Mc Henry, MD Category: New Structure The Fort McHenry Harris Teeter represents a state of the art food store with detailing evoking the historical overtones of its context while  incorporating environmentally sensitive design to achieve a LEED Silver Level.  Located near the historic Fort McHenry National Monument and  Shrine, the design embraces the aesthetic of the surrounding environment.  The site, a designated Brownfield, was ornamentally surrounded by  older warehouses and industrial buildings that have recently been converted to new offices.  Blending the mix of old and new, historic and state  of the art, and green design has resulted in a holistic solution to the design. The architectural response includes attenuated details of multiple   terracotta brick types, grapevine mortar joists, decorated panels, and metal canopies.  These elements have been orchestrated into a  composition of forms which have responded to the pedestrian circulation, city streets, highway overpasses and the local urban fabric. The layout of the store is refined, easy to navigate and easily understood. The interior is bathed in light from the clerestory windows that,  coupled with the many other energy savings systems, makes the Fort McHenry store a model of green design. Careful selection of colors, high  end wall tile finishes, detailed flooring patterns, integrated with clear signage are complemented by historic wall murals.  There were many elements that added to the unique design of the Fort McHenry Harris Teeter. The use of brick almost exclusively on the exterior forms, colors and details, acknowledges the historic neighborhood and urban context.  The commitment to Green Design adds to the  shopping experience.  The layout of the store with its open mezzanine suspended from the roof structure, takes advantage of the natural  daylight.  Creative use of high end finishes, wall tile, patterned floors and complimentary signage enhances the shopping experience. The use of  wall murals composed by local artists of historic images, ties the facility to its neighborhood roots.
