GAME 10: HARTFORD VS PENN STATE in scoring (5.8 ppg) and seventh in rebounding (2.4 rpg), while leading the Hawks with 90 assists. DEFENSE is the key Over her 15 year career, head coach Jen Rizzotti has always preached that defense wins championships and with five titles over that stretch it is evident that philosophy works. Over the past 10 years, Hartford has held opponents to an average of 55.9 points, while in the five years previous to that the average was over a point lower at 54.3 ppg. Over that 10 year period, the lowest average the Hawks have held opponents to came in 2009-10 when they help teams to an average of 50.4 points per game. That season, the Hawks went undefeated in America East play, and finished with 27 wins, one shy of the school record. Included in those 27 wins were 20-straight, a school record, which also led to the programs highest national ranking of 19th in the coaches poll and 21st in the AP poll. PLAYING THE BEST Coach Rizzotti continues to build one of the toughest non-conference slates in the nation. This season, the Hawks will play six teams
who advanced to the postseason in 2013-14, including a quarterfinalist in the WNIT, the Washington Huskies. Highlighting the Hawks non-conference schedule is the programs second appearance in the Triple Crown Cancun Challenge where they will face Furman, Florida State and Washington. FSU will represent the first of two NCAA teams Hartford will face with the other being Penn State who advanced to the Sweet 16. Other teams who advanced to the postseason including Furman (WNIT First Round), Quinnipiac (WNIT First Round) and Princeton (WNIT Second Round). PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE Coach Rizzotti and the Hawks signed three players to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period in November. The three members of the Class of 2019 will be 5-6 combo guard Lindsey Abed (Oakton, Va.), 5-10 wing Kelly Douglass (Clifton, N.J.) and 6-0 post player Jalay Knowles (Ossining, N.Y.) long range record The Hawks broke a single game record for the second-straight season last year when they finished with 16 three pointers against UMBC on February 22. The team record was one of two that fell against UMBC as then junior Amber Bepko finished 7-of-11 from beyond the arc, breaking the single game record for three pointers in a game by an individual. Hartford initially broke the team record two seasons ago when they finished with 14 three pointers against Maine. The record previous to that was 10 years old, set on January 29, 2003 with 13 against Vermont. For the season, the Hawks also broke a school record with their 200 total three point buckets, while Bepko broke the single season record for individual three pointers with 69. chasing history Senior guard Amber Bepko enters her final campaign chasing history in three separate categories in 2014-15. First, Bepko needs 100 points to become the 15th member of the 1,000 point club at Hartford. The most recent players to reach the 1,000 point plateau were Ruthanne Doherty and Daphne Elliott, both in 2012-13. After reaching the top-10 in career three pointers made, Bepko took over the second overall position with her third of four against BC (12.7). MaryLynne Schaefer (’09) leads that category with 222. Finally, the senior guard is currently ninth all-time in career steals with 162. She now needs 10 to pass Trish Slocum (’90) for eighth all-time. As a freshman, Bepko set a school record in back-toback games with eight steals against UNH and Vermont.

She also recently set a milestone in the America east earning her 150th league victory against the Maine Black Bears on Jan. 9, 2013. She now needs seven victories in league play to reach 175 for her career. Her 168 conference victories are also the most among all current and former league coaches.
