End of the Season Note from the HHB President Members:
This President's letter is my last letter for this season. Next month we start our new year. With the new year, the Board has a lot of things to start working on to prepare for next season. But this letter is not about what we need to do, but what we have done this past season. This past season we expanded the Girls hockey program. We had two U8 girls' teams at the mite level. The continued expansion is fantastic. However we still need to continue the growth. We would like to have enough girls to create an all girls in-house program. I hope we can reach that goal within the next few years. We also created a Traveling Squirt team. The team did very well for its first year. However, I believe its biggest impact was with the In-house program. Removing the A level players from the in-house program allowed a new group of kids to rise to leadership roles. I believe this format allowed more players to get involved in the game. The Board approved, and we are currently working on, final approvals with the city for the creation of a dry-land facility at the arena. This facility will provide additional training opportunities for players and teams throughout the year. This facility will use a synthetic ice-floor to allow players to practice small area skating skills and give a true feel to shooting drills. We hope to have this facility completed by August, 2006. This year we had 11 teams advance to post season play. That is 73% of our traveling teams had extended seasons. All teams should be proud of their accomplishments this past season. The Board congratulates and thanks all teams for all their hard work this year. Out of the 11 teams mentioned above, one team took it all the way. The Jr. Gold A team took an eighth seed in the state tournament to win it all. They beat #1 ranked Wayzata 4-3 in their first game. There second game was a real thriller with a triple overtime win (3-2) over Centennial. In the Championship game they showed they belonged at the top; beating #2 ranked Eden Prairie 3-1. We congratulate the Jr. Gold A team on a fantastic season! The Jr. Gold A State Championship allowed Al Carstensen to go out on top! After 26 years of coaching hockey to Hastings youth, Al has decided to see what life has in store for him after hockey. Al has been involved with Hastings hockey in many capacities, but it is his work with the kids that he is most remembered for. Al's teams have given so many players an opportunity to continue playing hockey when the high school team was no longer an option for them. I wish Al all the best and extend my personal thanks for all he has done for Hastings Hockey! I know I should recognize other things our association has done this past season and will probably think of some once this letter goes to press. However, I have limited space for my letter and I think I have gone beyond that already. But before I wrap this letter up, I want to say ‘Thank You’ to a group of people that often go unnoticed and un-thanked. That is the parents of each player. The parent, who sits through numerous practices, gets up for those early morning practices and rearranges their weekend to accommodate multiple practices, games and tournaments. During one of my coach's seminars I heard this saying; “Coaches, coach; players, play and parents, pay!” For all you have done, Thank You! As always, you can contact me directly on this or other Hastings Hockey Association related issues. You can email me at
[email protected]. I will try to respond to all inquiries in a timely fashion. Sincerely, Jerry Baum President, Hastings Hockey Association

The state tournament for Jr. Gold A was held this past weekend at the Eagan Civic Arena. It was an exciting tournament with some great fan participation and even greater hockey on the ice. Hastings' first game put them up against Wayzata. Wayzata has won the state tournament five times including the last three years in a row. Wayzata scored first early in the first period however with a pass from Ben Cysiewski, Corey White's slap shot from the blue line evened the score late in the first period. Hastings took the lead with the only goal for the second period made by another defenseman, Nick Horsch with a set up from Kirby McNaughton. The Raiders captain, Brad Beskau, added another goal early in the third period with assists going to McNaughton and Shawn Gerlach. Wayzata came back with a power play goal to make the score 3-2. Bobby O'Connell then buried what would end up being the winning goal on a pass from Zach Pearson and Horsch. Wayzata scored one more late goal but it wasn't enough to hang on to their state championship as Hastings advanced to the semi-final game.

Jr. Gold A Champions (continued)
In Saturday night's semi-final game, the short handed Raiders were matched up with Centennial. Many of the Hastings players headed out of town for spring break but the rest of the team and fans were pumped from their big win the night before. That momentum carried the team through regulation time and three OT periods with Brian Marsh putting it up on the board for everyone. Marsh had awesome game starting with the first goal of the game during a penalty kill early in the first period. His second goal came after some major discussion between the goal judge, referees and coaches in the second period. Centennial put one up on the board late in the second period sending Hastings to the locker room with a 2-1 lead. Centennial came out of the locker room strong with another quick goal to tie the game up and took twice as many shots during the period than Hastings. Goalie, Frank Sieben, blocked the rest of the shots to keep the Raiders in the game with regulation time ending in a tie. Both teams were still tied after the first OT sending them into the locker rooms and both came out strong to play their second OT period with 4 vs. 4 play, but were still tied at the end of that period. The third OT found them playing 3 vs. 3 and shortly after the half of that period Marsh gets the hat trick and wins the game on a pass from defenseman Justin Sneddeker.
Sunday's Championship game featured Eden Prairie as the home team and Hastings as the visiting team. Eden Prairie had dominated both of their previous games in the tournament with big scores so Hastings' defense and goal tender, Trevor Bradley, knew what to expect. Defensively, the Raiders were able to keep Eden Prairie at bay and offensively they out shot their opponent 2-1 but they just couldn't get past Eden Prairie's goalie sending both teams to the locker room with no score after the first two periods. A replay of Saturday's game with Eden Prairie coming out of the locker room strong and putting the goal on the board early in the third period. The Raiders took advantage of a power play and Cameron MacGrath scored a big goal to tie the game. Then late in the third period, Horsch and Marsh set up Beskau to get the game winning goal past Eden Prairie's goalie. Beskau added one more open net goal on a pass from Luke Pfeffer for a final score of 3-1.
After more than thirty years of coaching, head coach Al Carstensen's team brings home a state title in his last season before retirement. This was a great end to a great season. The Raiders' offensive line up includes Luke Pfeffer, Mike Callahan, Kirby McNaughton, Zach Pearson, Brian Marsh, Andrew Carstensen, Bobby O'Connell, Brad Beskau, Shawn Gerlach & Ben Cysiewski. Their defensive line up includes Shawn Lanning, Justin Sneddeker, Cameron MacGrath, Nick Horsch, Corey White, Justin Gustafson, Colin Boucher and goalies Frank Sieben and Trevor Bradley. They are coached by Al Carstensen, Mark Prettyman & Dave Nicklay and managed by Jeff Onischuk & Bruce Marsh and student manager Adam Ganrud. This was a great end to a great season! Be sure to congratulate the team members and ask them what they are going to do now that they've won the state championship — they're going to Disneyland!
Congratulations to ALL of the HHB Players on a great season! We hope you had a good time this year! Keep working on those skills this summer and we hope to see you on Hastings ice early in August! Call Rob Williams at 651-437-3075 for more information on summer ice at Hastings Arena!
