RODEO

HATS OFF TO THE COWBOYS The largest rodeo in Canada is back. Katie Gatens meets the rising stars who are kicking it up at the Calgary Stampede 1 RYLAN GEIGER, 24 How did you start? I grew up on a ranch. Horses were just part of life. Your event? Saddle bronc – ride a bucking horse for eight seconds. One to watch for Calgary 2014? If you make it to the Calgary, you’re one of the best in the world. Draw the right horses and it’s anybody’s game.

3 CHAD BESPLUG, 29 How did you start? My parents went to amateur rodeos when I was a kid. I’ve competed since I was nine. Your event? Bull riding – staying on a bucking bull as long as you can. Is rodeo changing? There’s more money to be made and more chance to travel. I’ve been to Brazil twice.

2 LUKE BUTTERFIELD, 29 Is rodeo changing? There are rodeos online now so audiences around the world can watch. Your event? Saddle bronc, the classic. What do you like most about rodeo? The cowboy doesn’t get paid unless they win. So the cowboy always tries with all his heart to win.

4 JESSEY LANNIN, 23 How did you start? I knew a couple of people in the Calgary Stampede so I went to the show and they were so nice and inviting that I moved here. Your event? Bareback riding. Is rodeo changing? Horses are bred for rodeo now, not wild. The stock is getting better, as is the competition.
