Have you seen this plant?: Ludwigia hexapetala is an invasive plant that is becoming common in sloughs and backwaters of the Willamette River. It was introduced into the valley probably through someone dumping an aquarium. The plant comes from South America where it forms impenetrable thickets in and along waterways. Close up of the leaves in the early season. Close-up of the flower in the bloom season, usually Mid summer here in Oregon.
What to do if you see this plant: Immediately report sightings to the Oregon Invasive Species Hotline: https://oregoninvasiveshotline.org/ The pond at Keizer Rapids Park provides great habitat for fish, birds and amphibians. As well as recreational opportunities for swimming and fishing.
Conservation Tips: Boating in the Willamette? Check your prop, trailer, anchor line for plants that could attach and hitch a ride to the next place you boat. Clean off your boat thoroughly before you leave. The state now has an aquatic invasive species permit system for boaters, to help stop the spread.
Here is the pond now being overrun by Ludwigia, doesn’t look like a good place to fish or swim does it? Photo’s courtesy of: Marion Soil and Water Conservation District and Mark Akimoff
