Happy Half Term I hope you all enjoy next week and look forward to welcoming you back to school on Monday 01 November. The children have had a very successful half term and I hope you are enjoying their Learning Logs which give you information about what your child’s been doing each week.
Wessex Children’s Book Festival 23 Oct – 31 Oct As part of the Wessex Book Festival, a group of our Year 2 pupils had an opportunity to see the children’s author, Tony Mitton, this week. They found the experience really enjoyable and it helped to boost their love of reading. The Wessex Book Festival is continuing throughout half term week and there are many opportunities to see authors and illustrators at different locations across the county. If you are interested in joining in with the various activities on offer, information about the event can be found on the following website:
www.hants.gov.uk/wcbf Tokens – we’re collecting again Once again we are collecting Nestle box top tokens. This scheme enables us to exchange the tokens for books for our school library. We are also collecting Morrisons vouchers which we use to buy some fantastic gardening resources. We would be grateful for your support with these promotions. Thank you
101 Ways to Save Energy As part of our commitment to help to reduce our carbon footprint and save energy, we will regularly include some tips in our future newsletters,
not only to help us in school but also to help you to save energy in your homes. ∗ ∗
∗
Compost your degradable rubbish to produce an unlimited free supply of fertiliser for the garden Use energy saving compact lamps and save up to 80% electricity costs. They can last up to 10,000 hours – ten times the life of normal lamps. Look out for LED lamps and LED perforated lamps – they last up to 100,000 hours. Choose light colours to paint walls or woodwork in the home. Dark colours absorb light and need brighter lighting using much more energy. Buy eco-friendly or lead-free paint.
Top Ten Parenting Tips Louise Evans, our Parent Support Advisor, will be running a workshop on some helpful hints to support parents. This will take place at the school from 1:30 – 3:00 on Monday 8 November 2010. More details will follow after half term.
Dinner Money Could we please remind you to send payments on Monday mornings, for the coming week. This should be in an envelope, clearly marked with your child’s name, class and the days for which the dinners are to be taken. If you would prefer to pay dinner money on a monthly, half termly or termly basis we are very happy for you to do so. If you have paid for a meal in advance, and your child is subsequently absent, the meal will be credited. Please don’t forget to let the office know if your child is entitled to receive free school meals.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Emergency Short Message Service Do you, or someone you know, have a hearing or speech impairment. There is a new service for deaf people and speech impaired people and those people who cannot use a voice telephone, to use in the case of an emergency. Please call into the school office if you would like more details.
Packed Lunches As with all items brought into school, it would be very helpful if you could name the containers you send in with your child’s packed lunch.
Reading Curriculum Evenings The information supplied at our recent curriculum evenings will soon be on our website, www.hazelwoodinfant.co.uk
Summer Reading Challenge Hampshire County Library & Information Service is pleased to inform you that Space Hop was one of their most successful summer reading games ever! Libraries were buzzing with children and families throughout the summer! The following Roll of Honour comprises a list of all the children from Hazel Wood who completed the Challenge and received Space Hop medals and certificates. Many more children made an enthusiastic start to the challenge and read at least three books, so they are to be congratulated too for taking part.

Samaritan’s Purse – Operation Christmas Child “Imagine not being able to send your children to school just because you cannot afford stationery! For one mother in Kyrgyzstan this was a reality. She had two daughters, but neither of them could attend school because they could not afford pens and paper. But this all changed when the two girls received shoeboxes from Samaritan’s Purse, complete with brand new school supplies. The mother was thrilled. “I’m so thankful to the people who did the shoeboxes because now I can send my children to school because they have school supplies, without these they couldn’t go to school.” Operation Christmas Child is an initiative of Samaritan’s Purse – a Christian relief and development organisation which works to help children and families in need across Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. We would like to be involved this year and would appreciate your help in sending as many shoeboxes filled with gifts and goodies as possible to children who need them most in some of the toughest parts of the world. Your child will have brought home a leaflet explaining everything you need to know about how to help. We would be grateful if you could ensure that all shoeboxes are returned to school by Friday, 12 November at the latest.
