It is Rivalry Week for Union College men’s hockey team (4-3-2 overall, 3-1-0 ECACH), which plays host to 10th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (62-2 overall, 2-1-2 ECACH) in a home-and-home series starting Friday (Nov. 15) at 7:30 p.m. in Messa Rink. The teams then head to Troy for a 7:00 p.m. faceoff on Saturday (Nov. 16) in Houston Field House. This weekend’s series features two of the highest scoring teams in the country, with RPI ranking fourth at 4.10 goals per game and Union standing 10th with a 3.78 scoring average. Union has won eight straight games against RPI and owns a 12-1-1 record in the last 14 meetings. Union’s last two losses in the series have occurred in overtime -- the team hasn’t lost in regulation since Oct. 26, 2007. Union and RPI will also meet in the second annual Mayor’s Cup game, to be held Jan. 25 at the Times Union Center in Albany. The Dutchmen are off to a strong start in ECAC Hockey play, having won three of four games and earning six of a possible eight points. The team’s lone setback occurred last Friday (Nov. 8), when Colgate left Schenectady with a 5-3 victory on the strength of three third-period goals. Daniel Carr scored twice and Matt Wilkins added two assists for Union, which was outshot for the first time this season. Rick Bennett’s squad rebounded with a 3-0 win over 14th-ranked Cornell on Saturday (Nov. 9). Junior G Colin Stevens notched his fourth career shutout with 11 saves as Union finished with a 31-11 shot advantage. Cole Ikkala tallied the game-winning goal (his first of the season) and freshman Eli Lichtenwald registered two assists in his first game action since the season opener, having missed seven games to injury. Senior Daniel Carr has taken over the team scoring lead with 13 points (6g-7a) in nine games. The Sherwood Park, AB native has been on a tear of late, compiling seven points (4g-3a) in his last four games. Carr has five multiple-point games this year and is closing in on the school’s all-time points record (for the Division I era). He trails Kelly Zajac (2008-12) by eight points for second place on the list and is 12 points shy of the record. Carr is already the school’s career Division I leader in goals (62) and power play goals (30).
