Heartbeat The Pulse of Heartland Co-op March, 2008 Over the past several years, Heartland has provided an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) in cooperation with Connections, Inc. The EAP program aids employees in resolving personal and family problems that may impact work performance. Although we have always felt that this was a valuable benefit to our employee base, the usage of this program has been far below our expectations and the norm of our industry. It is possible that our workforce does not need this type of program, but it is more likely that the details of this offering have not been fully understood. Therefore, we are increasing our efforts to get the details of our EAP in front of the employees.

A Message From Larry Petersen… CEO/General Manager

A few of the areas where the EAP provides assistance include: • Personal financial difficulties • Legal issues • Health concerns • Drug and alcohol addiction • Marital problems Recently, there has been a new service added that addresses the needs of employees’ older relatives. This is becoming more of a possibility as people are living longer and moving to distant geographic locations. I need to stress that the information provided and explored through the EAP is kept confidential. Beyond the number of individual cases, Heartland and Heartland management are not made aware of any confidential information between employees and Connections. If this is a program that can fulfill your personal need, please utilize this service. You can call Connections Inc. at 800-779-6125 on specific problems or to gain further knowledge of the EAP program.

Pickering’s new scale…... The picture in the bottom left corner of the Pickering warehouse and office was taken last summer prior to any construction starting. The picture at left top was taken last fall and now when I stopped there during the second week of March to see how the new construction was looking at that time I got this picture of the scale near completion. Like other construction jobs at Heartland locations, our winter this year was not very cooperative, but spring is here and now things should really pick up. We will be showing other Pickering projects in upcoming newsletters.

Mitchellville location joins in St. Baldrick’s fund raiser…... The St. Baldrick’s Foundation fund raiser for kids with cancer took place on March 13th at the Prairie Meadows Event Center in Altoona. Steve Neofotist at Heartland’s Mitchellville location did his own fund raising for the event as he collected donations from customers and in return they were given the opportunity to Curtis

shave his head. Board President, Art Churchill, started it out with several customers following him, getting their time with the razor. All donations given to shave Steve’s head were then taken to the event at Prairie Meadows, where Mitchellville Location Manager, Curtis Perry, was one of 27 who had their heads shaved. This was Curtis’ first time participating for a cause he strongly supports. Local radio KGGO sponsored this event and was there to interview those who were participating as well as children being honored. To learn more about this important foundation go to their website at www.stbaldricks.org. Work continues at Melbourne, though with our winter as it has been, the work has been moving slow. Things should be picking up now. This picture was taken the second week of March and it shows a shot from the south of where the old Behlen bin once stood. As reported in the last newsletter, a new 95,000 bushel bin will go up on the existing bin pad where the old Behlen bin stood.

Melbourne update…...
