ARTHUR O. EVE HIGHER EDUCATION OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM (HEOP) New York Institute of Technology’s Arthur O. Eve HEOP is a comprehensive program, jointly sponsored with the state of New York, to assist in providing access for all New Yorkers to the state’s private colleges and universities. This special program is designed for students who have the potential for and interest in furthering their education but who might not be able to attend college because of educational and financial circumstances. These students have special academic and financial needs and are admitted based on those circumstances. Our Arthur O. Eve HEOP staff works to make sure that each student’s individual needs — academic, personal and financial — are met through counseling, tutoring and a comprehensive financial aid package.
What are the requirements? As a first-time college student, you may be eligible for Arthur O. Eve HEOP if you: have lived in New York state for one year prior to the time of your admission to NYIT; have earned or will soon earn a high school diploma or approved equivalent (GED); meet the income guidelines issued by the New York State Education Department; have been unable to secure admission to the major of your choice through NYIT’s regular admission procedures; and demonstrate potential to succeed in college. If you have previously attended college, you may be eligible for Arthur O. Eve HEOP if you: have lived in New York state for one year prior to the time of your admission to NYIT; have participated in an educational opportunity program such as SEEK/CD or EOP; and earned a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Pre-freshman Summer Program… A five-week summer program is required for all entering Arthur O. Eve HEOP students to provide an academic and social orientation to life at NYIT. This program focuses on strengthening reading, writing, math and study skills. The curriculum also includes cultural trips, seminars on social adjustments, and a variety of leadership workshops. During this time, Arthur O. Eve HEOP students also participate in the NYIT Freshman Orientation required of all incoming students.
… that stays with you your first year! This program continues into the academic year with bi-weekly seminars focusing on academic and personal development.
Counseling Academic, financial, personal and career counseling are provided to assist students with the unique problems that they may encounter as they progress through their tenure at NYIT.
Tutoring Tutoring, an integral part of our program is used on an individual or group basis to assist students with their academic subjects and to promote behaviors that lead to high levels of success and achievement. Students work with peer and professional tutors, depending on the subject and the student’s need, to enhance the education received in class.
Financial Aid Financial assistance is an important component of the support services offered. As each student’s need differs, NYIT develops a full-need financial aid package combining state, federal and institutional grants and loans.
Will I be in regular classes? The five-week Summer Program is just for Arthur O. Eve HEOP students. However, during the fall semester, Arthur O. Eve HEOP students will be in courses with other students. A counselor will determine a freshman student’s fall course schedule based on placement exam scores and an individual’s academic needs and interests.
Application Needs Placement in Arthur O. Eve HEOP is limited and, therefore, applicants are encouraged to apply early. Official copies of SAT scores, High School transcripts, admissions essay and two letters of recommendation must be forwarded to The Office of Admissions. Students being considered for Arthur O.
