NEWS BRIEFS EP resident appointed judge Gov. Tim Pawlenty has appointed four Minnesotans to Fourth Judicial District Judgeships, including Tamara G. Garcia of Eden Prairie. Pawlenty announced the appointment of Garcia, Fred Karasov, Anne K. McKeig and Laurie J. Miller to the trail court bench vacancies in Hennepin County. Three vacancies occurred with the resignations of the Honorable Heidi S. Schellhas and the Honorable Francis J. Connolly, who were sworn in as Court of Appeals judges on Jan. 1, 2008; and the retirement of the Honorable Harry Seymour Crump. The effective date of Judges Schellhas and Connolly’s resignations and Judge Crump’s retirement was Dec. 31, 2007. The fourth vacancy will occur with the retirement of the Honorable Allen Oleisky on March 31, 2008. “Tami, Fred, Anne and Laurie bring a wealth of professional experience and have the skills and demeanor for the position,” Pawlenty said in a news release. “Their commitment to public service, strong work ethic, and diverse backgrounds will be an asset to the Hennepin County bench.” “Garcia has been a self-employed attorney in private practice since 2000; a judicial hearing examiner with the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community in Shakopee since 1995; a judicial hearing examiner with AMERIND Risk Management Corporation in Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico since 2007; and a director with the State Fund Mutual Insurance Company in Bloomington since 2000,” the release said. “Previously, she was an associate attorney and partner with the Pustorino, Pederson, Tilton and Parrington law firm in Edina from 1989 to 2000, and a staff attorney with the Minnesota Workers’ Compensation Court of Appeals in St. Paul from 1987 to 1989. Garcia earned her juris doctorate degree from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1986, and her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Minnesota in 1983.” Garcia is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association, where she served on the Board of Governors; Hennepin County Bar Association, where she serves on the Workers’ Compensation Section, and was a founding member of the Diversity Law Section; Minnesota Hispanic Bar Association; and Minnesota Women Lawyers. She is a member of the Minnesota Gambling Control Board, has been a
mentor with the University of Minnesota Law School Mentor Program, volunteers in a reading program for elementary and preschool students, has been a volunteer moot court judge with the National Hispanic Bar Association, volunteers at her children’s schools, and is a participant in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Garcia, 46, was bor n in Tampa, Fla., and lives in Eden Prairie with her husband, Steven.
Seeking Human Rights Award nominations Eden Prairie’s Human Rights and Diversity Commission is accepting applications for this year’s Human Rights Award, “recognizing an Eden Prairie individual, nonprofit organization, business or youth that has worked to create an inclusive community spirit through actions, activities or programs,” according to a news release from the city. The deadline for nominations for accomplishments from 2007 is Feb. 29. Recipients will be chosen by the commission at its March meeting and recognized at a May City Council meeting. Twins president to visit Lions Club Dave St. Peter, the Twins president, will be the guest speaker at the Eden Prairie Lions Club on Monday, Feb. 18. The event is a joint meeting with the Chanhassen Lions Club. St. Peter begins his 19th year with the Twins in 2008, after being named the fourth president in Minnesota Twins history in November 2002, according to a news release. Topics at the meeting will cover a variety of job aspects and an update on recent trades and the new stadium construction. This will be followed by a question-and-answer period. St. Peter has a wide job spectrum overseeing the team’s strategic planning process and the club’s business departments including ticket sales and service, corporate partnerships, marketing, community affairs, communications, broadcasting,
stadium operations, human resources and finance. He is also involved in businessrelated baseball decisions as well as the development, design and construction of the new TwinsHennepin County ballpark to be built in Minneapolis’ historic warehouse district. In the community, St. Peter serves on the board of the Twins Community Fund, the Minneapolis Downtown Council, the Greater Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Bob Allison Ataxia Research Center and the Park Nicollet Foundation. St. Peter was born in Bismarck, North Dakota, and graduated from the University of North Dakota. Dave, his wife, Joanie, son Jack, and twin sons, Eric and Ben, make their home in Eden Prairie. 3rd District debate set DFL Senate District 42 is hosting a Third Congressional District DFL debate with State Sen. Terri Bonoff; Edina Mayor Jim Hovland and Iraq war vetern and attorney Ashwin Madia. The three are vying for the DFL endorsement. Republican candidate Erik Paulsen has also announced his intention to run for the seat. “Join us as our candidates for endorsement debate how to defend and build America in the 21st Century,” the group stated in a news release. The debate is set for 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, in the Heritage Rooms at Eden Prairie City Hall, 8080 Mitchell Road, Eden Prairie. Topics are set to include, the economy, healthcare, education, building a green economy, transportation and infrastructure, Iraq and Afghanistan, antiterrorism/emergency management, dependence on foreign oil and securing our borders, according to the release. BUSINESS NEWS Eaton donates $15,000 Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corp. has donated $15,000 to Cass Lake Bena Family Council (CLBFC). Funds will be used to provide gifts, food and basic needs for agency clients. CLBFC has been serving at-risk families and children in the rural town of Cass Lake and the surrounding area since 1994. Eaton employees have supported CLBFC for more than 10 years by purchasing holiday gifts for foster children. Approximately 30 percent of the employees participate in this project each year by donating gifts of about $50 to each child. “Ensuring that Cass Lake continues to provide assistance to people in need is very important,” said Lee Marske, plant manager, Eaton’s Eden Prairie facility, in a news release. “Giving something back to the community is a hallmark of Eaton’s culture.” Eaton’s facility in Eden Prairie, part of the company’s Hydraulics Operations, employs approximately 260 people who manufacture hydraulic steering units and motors. Eaton Corp. is a diversified industrial manufacturer with 2007 sales of $13.0 billion.

Contestants will prepare and deliver a four- to five-minute speech before a panel of judges. The students’ speeches will be evaluated based on content and presentation to determine the top winners. First place and runners up will receive medallions. The top winning
speeches will be sent to the zone level where the winning speeches will advance to the district level for an opportunity to win a $1,500 college scholarship awarded by the Optimist International Foundation. Students under the age of 16 as of Dec. 31, 2007, are eligible to participate. Entrants need not be accomplished speakers. Advance registration is required.
