Winter 2014

Atlanta Decatur Oxford District North Georgia Conference United Methodist Women

Message from our President The period in the church year that begins with January 6 and extends to Ash Wednesday is known as Epiphany. One of the most important emphases during this season is prayer, both for our own daily guidance and as the undergirding power needed for our spiritual journey. What is prayer? To many, prayer is regarded as a repetition of words or a childish petition for material needs. By these terms, we have undervalued our reservoir of spiritual power. For us, prayer is far more than the mere gratification of our human whims. It is the practice of acknowledging the presence of Almighty God in every activity of our daily lives. Earlier this year I attended a Prayer Bead Workshop that helped me to correct a weakness within my own prayer life, which was to stay focused as I pray. The prayer beads that I made from this workshop allow me to start and finish my prayers. I have found that my prayer beads add sustainability to my spiritual journey. I am able to maintain my intimate relationship with God. Prayer is as basic to my spiritual life as breathing is to my natural life One of the things I think we, as United Methodist Women, must do is to increase our praying power, not only with ourselves but with our children, youth and young adults. We can do nothing better for the next generation than teach them to be still and wait on God through prayer. “Prayer is so simple. It is like quietly opening a door and slipping into the very presence of God.” I encourage you to have a Prayer Bead Workshop in your local units. Learn to release the energies of God, thru prayer by asking God to do what we cannot do ourselves. Blessing in 2014, Juanita Mullins ADOX District President

The Purpose of United Methodist Women: The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

In honor of Doris Paul, President of the North Georgia Conference UMW from 1989 to 1992, the North Georgia Conference awards special recognition pins each year to women in the conference who live out the UMW purpose as Doris Paul, herself, did. At this year’s NGC UMW Annual Meeting, two former missionaries were so honored: Margaret Curtis, a member of Ousley UMC and Jo Harbert, a member of St. Timothy’s UMC. Jo and Margaret were the guest speakers at the ADOX District Day Apart in March and they continue to inspire us, not only by their work as missionaries, but also by the work that they do here in our district.

Report of the Vice President Submitted by Alma Garrette, Vice President of ADOX UMW In keeping with this year’s theme “Doing a New Thing,” we decided to develop a questionnaire that would get feedback needed for planning the district programs from the local presidents who attended the President’s Breakfast on February 9, 2013. This year we have presented programs and workshops that appealed to all ages, including youth, young adults and older women. The participation of our United Methodist Women at our district events has increased. We now see more youth and younger women taking part in our programs. We closed out the year with three excellent programs, beginning with our District Fall Retreat where we offered four workshops: Nutrition presented by Magon Saunders; Line Dancing presented by Anita Adams; Human Trafficking presented by Janie Deadwyler; and Meditated Prayer presented by Jeanell Spence-Settles. What a great day of fellowship, fun, eye-opening (Human Trafficking), and using a new method for our prayer time. Let’s not forget our Annual Meeting where we were joined by our own District Superintendent Rev. Sharma Lewis, Rev. Eric Powell who was our guest speaker, Rev. Sharad Creasman, Columbia Drive UMC Assistant Pastor, and a recorded greeting from Rev. Dr. Walter L. Kimbrough, Senior Pastor of Columbia Drive UMC. Rev. Powell gave an inspiring message using our theme “Doing a New Thing” ( Isaiah 43:19). The reception hosted by the women of Columbia Drive UMC was outstanding. They provided an assortment of delightful treats for all to share. Thank you Ladies for such a warm and gracious welcome. The District’s Officer Training Event at Stone Mountain First UMC was very well attended including several youth. Jadah Hardeman made it extra special by her inspiring Liturgical Dance. Let’s work to get more of our members to attend the programs presented by the District and Conference UMW. They will benefit from the experience. Don’t forget 2014 is the year of “Making it Happen.”

Around Columbia Drive United Methodist Church Submitted by Alma Garrette, President of Columbia Drive UMW On October 20th Columbia Drive UMC United Methodist Women had the pleasure to host the Atlanta Decatur Oxford District United Methodist Women’s Annual Meeting. Our guest speaker, Rev. Eric Powell, gave an inspirational message using our theme “Doing a New Thing.” We were so pleased to have our own District Superintendent, Rev. Sharma Lewis install the 2014 District Officers. The UMW of Columbia Drive outdid themselves with the assortment of foods served at the reception. Thanks to all who attended the Annual Meeting and a special thank you to the women of Columbia Drive for participating and making this an occasion to remember. Columbia Drive United Methodist Women held their Annual Advent Dinner on Friday, December 13th. We were pleased to have in attendance several United Methodist Men who said they enjoyed the program, fellowship and dinner. Our program “My Cup Runneth Over” presented by several of the women was certainly very enjoyable. Can you imagine what can be said about Paper Cups, Glass Cups, Tin Cups, Silver Cups, Souvenir Cups and China Cups as they relate to the Bible? If you would like to present this at one of your meetings, please contact me at [email protected].

Cedar Grove UMW Focuses on Needs of Women and Children

6

Submitted by Valerie Willis, Cedar Grove UMW President The Esther Dorcas Unit of UMW of Cedar Grove ended the year by giving two deserving families in our surrounding counties monetary gifts to assist with food and housing for our Thanksgiving and Christmas projects. Our church members participated in giving gifts to an entire family that needed clothes and personal items. Their needs and wishes were presented on a Angel Tree; each angel (child) had their own request. Our members selected an angel, brought the gifts back to the church, and the gifts were delivered. In October, Cedar Grove held our annual Community Yard Sale and Fish Fry. Proceeds from rental space at this event went to benefit the United Methodist Women’s global and local ministries related to women and children needs. We are looking forward to more opportunities next year to help women and children in need. We are especially excited about hosting the District Day Apart in March 2014, and we pray for a good turn out.

FROM OUR CHURCH TO YOURS Submitted by the Flat Shoals UMW Officers We pray that your Christmas was celebrated with much joy and gladness because of Christ. The UMW at Flat Shoals UMC would like to extend warm wishes to all of you for divine prosperity in 2014. Happy New Year! Thank you for reaching out to us and offering your love, encouragement, support, and prayers. Please do not hesitate to call on us whenever we can assist you with your mission. We love you and thank God for you. Sandra Arnold, Pres. JeTawn Shealey, Sec. Ardalia Ward, Treas. Mary Mahone, MNO

Redan UMW’s Shoe Boxes and Holiday Boxes Submitted by Michelle Veerasawmy, Redan UMW President Back in early April, our Redan UMW came together to make Shoe Boxes for the Homeless. These boxes were made up of personal toiletries for women, girls and boys. We decided to give these boxes to Trinity United Methodist Church in downtown Atlanta where the Reverend Kathy Morris, Senior Minister, runs a women and children's shelter in the basement of the Church. They have rooms for women who have children and also for those who don't. Rev. Morris met with myself and my UMW Secretary Ms Rhonda Jackson (that’s her in the scrubs) to receive the boxes we had collected for their mission. We hope to collect more of these boxes and take them down there again in the future. We thank our Pastor, Reverend Patricia P. Pace, for her leadership, and also all of the Redan UMW who took part in this mission. We also prepared Holiday Boxes for needy families the very week of Thanksgiving. Each auxiliary within our church was given a family provided by the Dept. of Family and Children Services to take Holiday Boxes filled with food for Thanksgiving. Our women gave to one family where the grandmother was taking care of her grandchildren to help out her daughter who is quite sick. She was so appreciative and we were so thankful to be able to help those who need it for the holiday season. We will endeavor to take this up again! My wonderful Redan UMW sister Shenika Nicholson, an ITC student, came along to help with the delivery and her daughter Ms. Daja Nicholson. Many thanks to all who helped contribute to this mission. We will be doing this again.

North Georgia Conference United Methodist Women Frequently Asked Questions Prepared by Tryphenia Speed, North Georgia Conference Vice President, from the United Methodist Women Website and other materials

Question: What is the Goals of Excellence recognition? Each year, United Methodist Women members prepare for faithful living and action by studying mission studies. Mission studies are offered each year: a geographical, topical, and spiritual growth study. These studies motivate, inform, and enrich our commitment to global ministry. Members take one of the three mission studies through the organization’s Mission “u” program offered in the conference. Members who attend all sessions of one study can volunteer to be a study leader facilitator in the conference. Local units or circles must spend 4 hours of class time with one of the mission studies led by a facilitator who attended the 8 hours of conference led training which is usually held in July of each year. The Goals of Excellence award recognizes the units that completed one, two or three studies. Question: Can a unit receive Goals of Excellence recognition, if they do not hold a study? Unit members can attend a study with another local unit, however there must be two or more unit members attending the study for 4 hours. Question: Why do we have a United Methodist Women Reading Program? For 140 years, members of United Methodist Women and predecessor organizations have been involved in mission that includes prayer, study and action. The Reading Program is a study opportunity, but it should also lead to action. The purpose of the program is to encourage United Methodist Women members to:      

Expand understanding of and participation in God’s mission. Increase sensitivity to all human beings—their needs, interests and concerns. Encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today. Grow in understanding of Scripture as it relates to Christian faith in contemporary life. Enhance self-knowledge and act from that knowledge. Strengthen involvement in local and global Christian mission.

Question: What books count for the United Methodist Women Reading Program? Selections can be from the 2010-2014 reading lists if not included in previous reports (including youth titles). A book from each of the five (5) categories must be read along with the reading of Response Magazine for Level 1. Bonus Books: When you see the "B" near a book’s title in the Reading Program catalog, it is a bonus book. Bonus books count as two books - either as two books in one category or as one book in each of two categories. Question: Is there Leadership training for all members? United Methodist Women depends on laywomen who use their God-given gifts to engage in God’s mission in the world. United Methodist Women is committed to developing strong leaders through education and training that equip women with leadership skills. Women are offered the opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of mission, grow spiritually and have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of women, children and youth. As a member of United Methodist Women, you have the opportunity to serve at the local, district, conference, jurisdiction and national levels. While any woman can join United Methodist Women as a member. United Methodist Women elected leaders must be laywomen who are willing to commit their talents, time, energy and effort to serve God’s mission. Presidents at all levels of the organization must be members of a United Methodist church. Our work is inspired by our PURPOSE and turning faith, hope and love into action. Making this statement a living reality is our goal. Commitment to God’s calling, sensitivity to others, and openness to new ideas and a heart for mission are all needed to foster the values that are at the core of the PURPOSE. Question: What does the term and tenure mean? Term is the specified time for which a person is elected to an office or a committee. Tenure is the specified total length of time an elected leader may serve in an office or combination of offices. Question: Must a woman have experience on the district executive committee before she can be nominated to a conference office? No, lack of previous experience as an elected leader in United Methodist Women shall not be a barrier to nomination and or election. This includes members of the Committee of Nominations.
