Spring 2016

From Little Acorns Mighty Oak Trees Grow We want to nurture a love of nature in our children. To excite their curiosity, so that as they grow, so does their understanding, desire, and capacity to look after our world. We want to inspire budding botanists, marine biologists, conservationists and gardeners! We were delighted with this lovely picture by Lola in Otter Class of her family gardening together. Eco News Scootsure Training On Wednesday 10th February thirty Year Two children received training from Scootsure who provide a playground based training exercise for scooter users. It is intended to improve safety for riders and pedestrians and make scooting to school a viable, active and sustainable alternative to using the car. They covered topics

including: safety checks, sharing pavement space and emergency stops. The training was very successful and we would like to run further sessions in the future. These will be offered to those children in Year Two who didn’t secure a place this time. In the meantime here are some tips they gave us

on how to scoot safely to school:  Wear a helmet.  Always check what is behind you before you start a journey.  Take care when sharing the pavement and avoid any obstacles.  Remember to use the Green Cross Code when crossing the road!

Snowdrops One of the earliest bulbs to flower. Look out for them in damp woods and by streams. Bluebell shoots These pop up early to get as much light as possible before the tree canopy closes over. Elder budburst The elder is one of the first trees to sprout leaves. Look out for its dark red buds bursting open.

Primrose Primroses like damp and shade; spot them in woods, meadows and hedgebanks. Lesser celandine Look out for shiny yellow flowers and heartshaped leaves covering woodland floors.

Signs of Spring Ready to get detecting? Look for the first signs that Spring is on its way: Bird Song Listen for birds like the song thrush tweeting that spring is on the way. Frogspawn Look for balls of jelly in ponds, ditches and slowmoving streams. The black specks are eggs. Hazel catkins These are the male flowers of the hazel tree. They’re sometimes called lambs’ tails.
