Become part of the solution to pollution. If you are devoted to keeping our waterways clean, have time to assist with the monitoring process and possess basic analytical skills, join Stream Waterwatch. This program, sponsored by Hillsborough County and the Southwest Florida Water Management District is managed by Hillsborough Community College (HCC). Its purpose is to closely monitor the health of streams and rivers in Hillsborough County. The task is formidable, but through the efforts of dedicated volunteers we have had great success. We are currently recruiting new volunteers to enhance and broaden our stream monitoring network in Hillsborough County. Come join us! All adults are invited to become involved. Children with adult supervision may also participate.

What’s involved? Volunteers can choose from several levels of participation. The first is selecting a stretch of a river or stream, preferably near your home or business. Once you have selected a site and have conducted a watershed walk and visual surveys, you may also choose to participate in the chemical analysis of your selected site and in assessing its biological health. You may also make individual arrangements to work with the county on a Habitat Enhancement Project. The levels of participation are listed below.

Levels II and III Level I Level I is the starting point for new volunteers. The emphasis is on using watershed walks and visual surveys as evaluation tools.Volunteers regularly evaluate a stream segment, pick up litter which helps improve water quality and report results to Hillsborough County Stream Waterwatch. You must commit to adopt a stream or river section for at least one year.

Levels II and III focus on biological and chemical monitoring of water quality and habitat.Volunteers can also choose to conduct a habitat enhancement project to improve water quality. In all levels, gathering and sharing information about the adopted stream, and reporting problems when noticed, helps protect water quality. The difference between Levels II and III is one of increasing activity. Level II volunteers choose one of the activities below in addition to the Level I activities. Level III volunteers choose two or more of the activities below in addition to Level I activities. • Quarterly Biological Monitoring • Monthly Physical/Chemical Monitoring • Habitat Enhancement one time project (arranged with Hillsborough County) All levels of participation require training. Workshops are arranged by the Hillsborough County Stream Waterwatch at the Regional Environmental Training Center (RETC) at HCC’s Plant City Campus. Training includes an overview of the program, chemical and biological monitoring techniques and quality assurance testing to assure data integrity. Training workshops are held at various Hillsborough County parks and at the RETC in Plant City. Stream Waterwatch data is maintained in an online database through the Hillsborough County Watershed Atlas internet site located at http://www.hillsborough.wateratlas.org.
