Holmes Agro-Nomic Newsletter JUNE 2017 Protecting your wheat crop from Fusarium Head Blight Winter Wheat will soon be at T3 crop stage and require protection from FHB! With the high fusarium risk due to the wet weather, and the multiple reports of Stripe Rust across Ontario a T3 application of Prosaro will once again be important in 2017! Prosaro combines 2 active ingredients to give you fast acting and long-lasting DON reduction and leaf disease control. The optimum application timing for the best overall performance against both leaf and head diseases is during early flowering at Day + 2- the Anthers will be visible, starting in the middle of the head. For Fusarium Head Blight suppression, coverage of the head is essential, forward and backward facing nozzles achieve best results. With our performance acre management strategy at Holmes Agro, we have also appreciated a synergistic effect from including a slow release product with a fungicide at a T-3 timing. The benefits are extra Nitrogen at a critical crop stage, and an enhanced carrier to promote fungicide coverage on the plant. If you require any assistance with staging your fields or need chemical dropped off please let us know.
Start Clean Stay Clean – Manage your Weeds Importance of Early Weed Control Weeds emerging prior to or at planting are the most competitive with corn and soybeans. A significant portion of yield is a risk if early emerging weeds are allowed to compete alongside emerging corn and soybean plants during the first several weeks after planting. Research by University of Guelph scientist Dr. Clarence Swanton states that crops can sense the presence of weeds in the soil and will change their physiology and growth patterns if they detect above ground weed competition. Herbicide Control With changing weed spectrums and herbicide resistance on the rise, product selection and timing becomes critical to mitigate weed competitions throughout the season. Many product options available in today’s marketplace, so whether a pre-plant, pre-emerge residual herbicide or post emergent herbicide program. It is best to design a plan that both matches and practices; Good sound agronomics, the 4R principles (the right product, at the right time, at the right rate in the right place) and Resistant Management to mitigate further pressures from nuisance resistant weed strains. Visit with a Holmes Agro sales representative soon and discuss available “crop protection” options.
