THE ASCENSION OF DAY
RUMMAGE SALE
Thursday, May 5th, was Ascension Day. This is one of the earliest Christian festivals dating back to the year 68 CE. According to the New Testament, Jesus Christ met several times with his disciples during the 40 days after His resurrection to instruct them on how to carry out His teachings. It is believed that on the 40th day He took them to the Mount of Olives, where they watched as He ascended to heaven.
The HRS Rummage Sale is slotted for Saturday, May 7th from 8am-2pm. If you have time on Saturday, please stop by and help. If you have time to help set up, please consider arriving earlier. The office was informed that the event will go on rain or shine! 130th YEAR BASH Next school year marks the 130th year bash, where HRS can celebrate the future and honor the past. If you would like to be on this anniversary committee, please attend the next Parent Club Meeting on Wednesday, May 25 at 6pm.

THEME WEEK THIS WEEK
Monday: Lounge Day
favorite college Thursday: Throwback Thursday Friday: Dress for Success Day
REVIEW/PREVIEW Mrs. Jerwers– 1st & 2nd What sounds can you hear? How are they made? This was the first-grade literature focus for the week. The children identified both problems and solutions as they learned new vocabulary such as volume, squeaky, and distract, and very enthusiastically discussed different sounds encountered daily. The violent thunderstorms experienced Thursday were an added bonus to our discovery of sounds! Second-graders revisited cooperation as they read texts on teamwork. After reading, “Astronaut Handbook” by Meghan McCarthy, one student noted that the first moon landing couldn’t have happened without teamwork. This unit helped students realize that every person is integral to the success of a team! In math first-grade students continued exploration of geometric shapes as they expanded their knowledge to include geometric solids. Across the room, in second grade, students were active measuring objects using both inches and centimeters. Both units will continue into next week. Finally, during Religion, students are busy understanding how to pray like Jesus. In the classroom, prayer is part of our daily routine; please continue modeling this at home.
Ms. Turner– 3rd & 4th In religion this week, the class discussed how parishioners put their faith into action by helping out with various roles in the community, such as an advisory committee. In math, the third grade explored how equivalent fractions have the same size, though not necessarily the same shape. While, the fourth grade solved word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions. In our reader’s workshop, the class continued to read Charlotte’s Web with a focus on making predictions and comprehension. Furthermore, the class engaged in a literature circle group, where each student had an assigned task to share (summarizer, question writer, summarizer, illustrator, vocabulary finder, and text connector). In our writer’s workshop, the class finished the drafts of the middle of their narratives. Moreover, the class began to organize and draft the end of their narratives (bringing a close to beginning, middle, and end). In science, the class wrapped up the discussion on surface changes to Earth’s surface. Finally, our third and fourth grade class hosted Mass this week. Thank you parents, for all of the time and effort put forth in your children to make sure they are prepared and ready for Mass! It certainly shows! On another note, this week, the class enjoyed a movie and popcorn in the late afternoon as a fantasy auction redemption. We thank the Bruns’ family for the treat! As always, thank you for your continuous support! Happy Mother’s Day and thank you to the families that will be hosting Mass with our third and fourth grade this weekend! Mr. Junkins– 5th & 6th This week in 5th grade math we learned how to convert metric units of weight, length and capacity. In social studies, we learned about the Qin and Han dynasties of ancient China. In science, we learned about the importance of renewable energy resources and the advantages they have over non renewable resources. In writing we created and presented informative essays on different animals. In reading we continued our literary circle activities using The Egypt Game, our last book of the year!
Ms. Wright– Jr. High This week 7th grade social studies students began studying the Renaissance. With a look at humanism on Wednesday and focus on the characteristics of Renaissance art on Thursday, we are moving along toward the modern era. 8th grade history students are moving rapidly toward the Civil War, with a look at several compromises that ultimately did not succeed. In Writing, students continued building their knowledge base and note card collection on their way to a final research paper. 7th grade Language Arts students are moving toward the end of Catherine, Called Birdy and will be putting together their journal entries next week, while 8th grade Language Arts students are pushing toward the end of To Kill a Mockingbird. Thank you so much to the 7th grade students and their families for the beautiful roses on Tuesday!
Mr. Morris– Jr. High This week, the 8th grade students investigated wave behavior by observing refraction, diffraction, and reflection of light through bubbles and a soapy mixture. In 7th grade, the science students read about biological niches and researched ecological succession after events like forest fires and glacier movements. Meanwhile in Algebra, we began a unit on solving and graphing quadratic equations this week, while in Pre-Algebra, our students collected data, created circle graphs, and calculated the circumference of circles. Finally, in religion, our students had the unique opportunity to meet and ask questions to Bishop Cotta. They discussed the teachings of Pope Francis, the meaning of their Confirmation, and the significance of devotion to the Virgin Mary during the month of May. Pray for them as they celebrate their Baccalaureate Mass this Friday at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Sacramento!
