Home Learning Guidance Why Home Learning? Home Learning [homework] checks that you have understood what you have done in class, and helps you prepare for something that you might be doing in the next lesson for that subject.

Year 8 English What will be studied this term Ballads (Poetry) For reading: • Students will read a range of texts and consolidate a range of skills such as retrieving relevant information, interpreting texts and forming opinions based on textual evidence, analysing the structure of texts and the effects of specific words and phrases while considering the social and historical context of texts. For writing: • Students will also be encouraged to play with words and to consider the effects of their vocabulary choices and poetic devices as well as the underlying message/tone of their writing as they follow the conventions of ballads to produce their own pieces of poetry For speaking and listening: • Students will be encouraged to talk and listen with confidence. Their tasks will involve an individual ballad being shared with the class and drama-based tasks which could include reenacting a ballad or a news-style interpretation of a poem in small groups.

During the second Autumn term, students will complete a series of activities and a unit test. During the unit, your child will complete a controlled assessment based on one Ballad to track their progress in reading. There will be opportunities to improve the controlled assessment level when appropriate. Assessment activities and the controlled assessment will be marked according to the School’s assessment and feedback policy and also the criteria outlined above.

Year 8 Science What will be studied this term This term we will be looking at the reactions of metals. • Which metals are more reactive then others and why? • What type of compounds do metals form when they react? • We will then study the reactivity series (which metals are more reactive than the others and why). The final topic is the rock cycle. We will look at the different type of rocks that our planet is made of and how they are transformed into other types of rocks.

Year 8 Art
What will be studied this term Still-Life During this term you will gain an understanding of some of the requirements of what is needed to improve your Level in Art • You will be taught some of the approaches to create a successful observational drawing. You will be given some guidelines designed to improve your drawing skills further and therefore improve the quality of your drawings • You will begin to understand how to adapt and refine your work and develop it further • You will also develop an understanding of what elements of the project have worked well and plan how they are going to develop their personally skills further via self, peer and teacher evaluations. • You will develop an understanding of how to adapt and refine your work further, in light of evaluations. • You will also create a response to the project based on both your understanding of what makes a successful still life and the work of the Cubist movement.

You will be given continuous verbal feedback and also given the opportunity to both self and peer assess. Formal major written feedback will be given on a half termly basis. As a dedicated Art student you should be creating artwork and refining your skills all the times. The more time an artist spends on honing their craft the more successful the work they produce will become. Even when homework is not set students should be working on extending their portfolio further. YEAR 8 Design & Technology
What will be studied this term •

Students will complete a class based project in one of the four areas of study; Textiles, Graphics, Resistant Materials and Food. Students will spend approximately 8 weeks (16 lessons) in each area before a rotation to the next area of study. Students will do projects based on the following themes; TEXTILES; Embellished fabric cover for a diary/journal inspired by the artist Gustav Klimt, GRAPHICS; Pop up books RESISTANT MATERIALS; Moving toy FOOD; Baked products. Extended homework projects will be set by each teacher and will cover a number of tasks which explore the key elements of the ‘design and making’ process in Design & Technology at Key Stage 3.

Classwork will be marked using the whole school assessment and feedback policy and in line with expected level progress in Design & Technology at Key Stage 3. Students work will be marked using KS3 Design & Technology criteria based on the design process; research & analysis, specification, generating ideas, developing ideas, planning, making and evaluation. The extended homework projects will reinforce the project themes and each task will be set and collected in on a weekly basis, and marked at the end of the project with an overall level in line with the National Curriculum for Design and Technology at Key Stage 3.

Extended homework projects will be handed to students at the start of the project. Each task will be broken down into must, should and could tasks which will enable students to work against success criteria for achieving a lower, middle and higher level. The must is what all students must complete, the should is what some students will complete to achieve a middle range level, the could and extension tasks are for those students that want to aim to achieve a higher level.

What will be studied this term Comedy • •
Students will be assessed to gain a drama specific level. Students will look at different genres of Comedy and they will be exploring the use of conventions with a range of scripts and devised work.

Students are formally assessed at the end of each term through a process of teacher, peer and selfassessment. Key pieces of class work will be marked according to the school’s assessment and feedback policy. All performances are filmed for moderation purposes.

The students will be required to spend time at home learning lines and reviewing their rehearsal notes from lessons.

Student progress will be measured using a range of assessments that will be held at the end of each topic studied. This piece of work is levelled and shared with the student to track and monitor their progress, in line with their MT (minimum target) and CT (challenge target). Within lessons the teacher will also use a variety of AfL (assessment for learning strategies) that will ensure the teacher is adapting activities to cater to the needs of all students and make sure progress is being made within individual lessons. Year 8 ICT What will be studied this term Project Tesco •
This half term sees Year 8 students complete an extended project on the use of data by Tesco New Oscott.

The project analyses the use of data by Tesco, whilst developing students skills in the Microsoft Office packages.
•
The lesson is structured so that students develop a mural on data uses at Tesco as a starter for each lesson, and then the project task sees how Tesco uses Microsoft Office packages to gather information about customers from the data, in order to send them targeted offers. This unit uses the following programs, where the skills learnt can be transferred and used when completing tasks in other subjects across the curriculum: Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.

The work will be assessed via circulation and assistance, peer-assessment and selfassessment. At the end of each lessons, students will assess their performance and skill development in lesson, including what worked well (www), even better if(ebi) and an effort grade – they will use this evaluation in the next lesson to challenge themselves to progress further. Once the final work has been produced, it will then be teacher assessed against Key Stage 3 levels for ICT understanding and ICT skills.

A Home-Based Independent Learning workbook (HBIL) will be issued on the first lesson of the unit. This supports the keywords introduced in this unit, and the gets students use them to explain what they have done in the unit. Project Task One of the best ways to remember how to use a Microsoft Office package is to explain how to use it to others. In this unit’s project task, students are to create user guides for Year 6 Students on the different packages used in this unit: Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.

During the first week of each activity students will be given a baseline line assessment of their current grade. Students will then be assessed at the end of each unit and hopefully have made the required two sub levels progress (i.e. start grade of a 4c and an end grade of 4a for that sport). What needs to be done at home •

To attain higher grade students will have to apply tactical knowledge in a game situation. Students are directed towards the library to read the rules, regulations and scoring systems for each sport. By simply watching games of rugby or hockey will help students to understand the requirements of each sport and can see what the specific skills look like.

Students will begin to explore the nature of wealth and whether it brings happiness. Within this unit they will study the Muslim practice of Zakat, the Sikh attitude to wealth and wealth creation, the work and philosophy behind Christian Aid, the Fair Trade Movement.
