Hopkins Update May 2017 This month Ronnie and Harry made another trip to the Rio Bocay. It was raining a lot and the river current was strong. They met with the Teachers’ Committee in Ayapal to continue planning for the upcoming Teachers’ Conference. The next day, Harry hiked to Pueblo Nuevo which is a Mayagna (indigenous) community. The members of this community Villagers building their school in Pueblo Nuevo on the Rio Bocay are building a one-room school. Harry also visited Saupih where the community members are also building a one-room school, as well as a church. Ronnie and Harry also visited Kayaska where a two- room school is under construction. This month we had a crafts workshop for the sewing ladies. Lupita, a young woman in Yesman’s Youth Leadership Class, taught the women how to make gift bags and greeting cards from brown packing paper. Our friend, Rich, hosted the meeting at his house. The colorful T-shirts are an annual donation from Mary of Trinity UMC of Grand Rapids, MI. (Several women from the Mira Luz community were not able to come due to flooding of their homes.) Top row: Lotti (Angi’s Mom), Julia, Azucena, Maria Dilia, Rich, Lupita, Estabana, Romelia, Lupita Bottom row: Reyna, Esperanza, Janeth, Marcela, Elda Rosa and Maria Dilia enjoy lunch in Granada; the other Sewing Seeds ladies chose to have a chicken dinner to share with their families… an annual gift for Mother’s day from Amelia of Northside UMC, Atlanta, GA. While waiting for lunch, Maria Dilia inspects some of Rosa’s latest creations.

In April 2015 Juan interned with the Dalton UMC of Dalton, GA. While there he participated in the DAP program in which young people help local residents with home repairs. On his return to Nicaragua, Juan implemented this program in his hometown of Tipitapa. Each year he organizes a group of youth who make much needed repairs in local barrios. At left, Juan inspects a home... this month Lupita of Mira Luz was able to have her roof repaired before the rains came.

Erenia, another youth who participated in the Dalton UMC Internship Program, is finishing two years serving in Ghana with fellow TMS missionaries, Mary Kay and Charlie Jackson. Erenia has been teaching at a preschool and has also been able to use her skills as a nurse.
