Recycling is an important way for citizens to actively participate in helping keep our environment healthy for future generations. It's also very easy to do! This brochure contains detailed information on speciJc materials acceptedfor recycling by Union County Public Works. It also contains information on locations where items are accepted, and how to properly prepare items for recycling. The best part is that most properly prepared items are acceptedfor FREE!
Union County Public Works currently recycles the following types of materials at our landfill and our six satellite collection centers. Not all recyclable items are accepted at all six of the satellite collection sites. Most recyclable items are accepted free of charge. Please check this brochure for specifics on the particular material you wish to recycle. Please confirm the appropriate drop off location, and review specific information on how to properly prepare (rinsing, removing lids, etc) the item for recycling. Aluminum Cans, Steel Cans, and Spiral Cans - cans (beer and soft drink), steel (tin) cans used for h i t s , vegetables, soups, juices and other food items, and spiral (biscuit, orange juice cans) are accepted fiee of charge at the landfill and all 6 collection sites. These items can be mixed together for disposal. Please rinse. Newspapers, Inserts, Magazines, Catalogs, Computer paper, and Phonebooks - are accepted loose, bundling is not necessary. These &e accepted free of charge at the landfill and all 6 collection sites. No wrapping paper, or hardback books accepted. Yard waste is not acceptable at the sites.
Glass - clear, brown and green bottles and jars, are accepted loose. Must be either food or beverage type glass. These are accepted free of charge at the landfill and all 6 collection sites. Glass must be rinsed out with lid removed. Mirrors, ceramic cups and plates, clay flower pots, crystal, light bulbs, window glass, heat resistant ovenware, canning jars and drinking glasses are NOT ACCEPTABLE recyclable glass. Corrugated Cardboard - must be flattened. These are accepted free of charge at the landfill and all 6 collection sites. Boxes must be flattened. Cereal boxes, cracker W boxes, or coated cardboard are not accepted. Plastic Containers - PET (#I) soft drink bottles or HDPE (#2) . . milk and water jugs. Liquid detergent, shampoo, and conditioner bottles are other examples. Check the triangle mark on the bottom of the container, if it has a numeral 1 or 2 inside it, then it will be acceptable. These are accepted free of charge at the landfill and all 6 collection sites. Please rinse. Plastic grocery bags, and oil or antifreeze containers are not accepted.
Motor Oil & Transmission Fluid Maximum of five (5) gallons each. Accepted free of charge at the landfill, Parkwood and Sun Valley sites. Must be poured into the specified container at our sites.

White Goods & Non Ferrous Metals Household Appliances such as Refi-igerators, Freezers, Hot Water Heaters, Washers, and Dryers, Refrigerators and fieezers must be empty of all contents. Non ferrous metals includes such items as bicycles, tire rims, swing sets, grills, and tin roofing. Accepted free of charge, but only accepted at the landfill. Fence wire, meti1 bands, gas cans, propane bottles, televisions, or microwaves are not accepted for recycling. -

Batteries - car batteries only. Accepted free of charge, but only accepted the landfill. No other types of batteries are accepted. Tires - must be separated fiom all other materials for disposal, must be clean and removed from the rim. Citizens must stack properly in our trailers. Accepted only at the landfill. Most tire disposal is free. Call (704) 233-9289 for details on cost (if any) of tire disposal for individuals.
