HARMFUL HOUSEHOLD CHEMICAL WATCH LIST Before you grab that store bought cleanser off the shelf, you may want to consider some of the chemicals you could be exposing to your family. PHTHALATES, which are known endocrine disruptors, are found in many fragranced household products, such as air fresheners, dish soap and even toilet paper. If you see the word “fragrance” on a label, there’s a chance phthalates are present. TRICLOSAN, found in most liquid dish and hand soaps labeled “antibacterial,” can promote the growth of drug-resistant bacteria if overused. Studies have found dangerous concentrations of triclosan in rivers and streams, where it is toxic to algae. The FDA banned triclosan in these products in September 2016, but manufacturers have a year to comply with this new regulation. (EPA is continuing to allow them in other household products). QUARTERNARY AMMONIUM COMPOUNDS OR “QUATS”, which can help breed antibioticresistant bacteria if overused, are found in fabric softeners and most household cleaners labeled “antibacterial.” They may also be a skin irritant or may encourage respiratory disorders. 2-BUTOXYETHANOL belongs in the category of “glycol ethers,” a group of powerful solvents. It may cause sore throats when inhaled, and at high levels, glycol ethers can also contribute to narcosis, pulmonary edema and severe liver and kidney damage when used in unventilated spaces. It is often found in window, kitchen and multipurpose cleaners. Also be aware of: PERCHLOROETHYLENE OR “PERC”, which is a neurotoxin, is classified as a “possible carcinogen.” It’s found in dry-cleaning solutions, spot removers and carpet and upholstery cleaners. California actually plans to eliminate all use of “PERC” by 2023 because of its suspected health risks. AMMONIA, which is common in commercial window cleaners, is a powerful irritant. Those who may be severely affected are those who have asthma and elderly people with breathing problems. Chronic exposure may contribute to the risk of ailments such as chronic bronchitis and asthma. CHLORINE can be found in scouring powders, toilet bowl cleaners, mildew removers, laundry whiteners and even tap water. It can be a respiratory irritant at an acute level and may even be a serious thyroid disrupter.
