If you apply only one layer of basecoat, the finished piece will have variations. The colour that shows through the cracks will be different. You can also paint on multiple colours in your basecoat to have different colours showing through. Let dry. Note: I prepped the watercolour paper with gesso first.
Painting your basecoat in with many thin, even layers will give you one solid colour showing through. Let dry.
Applying the crackle medium should be done with one even layer that isn’t too thick. Make sure you have full coverage if you want to crackle the entire piece. Let dry completely.
Once the crackle medium is dry, paint the top coat. This should be done quickly as the crackling process starts righta way. The lighter topcoat was applied using horizontal strokes.
The lighter topcoat was applied using a damp sea sponge.
The lighter topcoat was applied using vertical strokes.
The lighter topcoat was applied using a heavy padded application.
Once dry, apply a layer of varnish to protect the piece. For this technique, I applied a layer of Americana Deco Soft Touch varnish and let dry completely. I could then continue to build upon this piece for home décor use or mixed media.
