Human Trafficking Human trafficking is a current day crisis reaching epidemic proportions in all of our communities. It is a $32 billion industry worldwide with as many as 27 million slaves. Between 100,000 - 300,000 children are at risk for sexual exploitation in the United States each year. When we look at Michigan, the statistics are even more alarming. Michigan as a state is in the top five for human trafficking with Metro Detroit being the number two city in the nation! We must rally together to prevent, rescue and restore those who are enslaved.

are trafficked into the United States every year.

We started the Let’s Stop It movement to raise awareness, educate, and get others motivated to help fight this social injustice. We have placed two billboards along 8 Mile Road and have presented several events to promote awareness in our communities. As part of our collaborative efforts, we are a member of the Michigan Human Trafficking Task Force, Southeast Region Task Force as well as the Macomb & Oakland Anti-Human Trafficking Coalition. We encourage you to educate yourself and share what you know with your colleagues, family and friends. To learn more, visit our Facebook page at Let’s Stop It or our website, StopIt.org

Bed & Bread trucks are unique to The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit, leaving from The Army’s Acres of Hope campus in Detroit to serve more than 5,000 meals within neighborhoods at designated stops every day of the year. Last year the Ford Motor Company Fund delivered a brand new truck for the fleet of Bed & Bread Club vehicles. The Michigan-based corporation also pledged $50,000 to support The Salvation Army’s mission to prevent hunger and homelessness in Metro Detroit. As a result Marathon donated a year’s worth of gasoline. Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services works with community partners to advance driving safety, education and community life. The Ford Motor Company Fund has operated for more than 60 years with ongoing funding from Ford Motor Company. Each time we serve a meal or provide a bed in a shelter, we thank supporters like you who help us achieve the greatest possible outcome. We focus on helping people become self sufficient— and providing the second chance they need and deserve.

Case managers with the Bed & Bread program also assist clients by helping them receive critical social services through The Salvation Army’s housing and rehabilitation treatment programs. We help people find a permanent place to live, a career path, educational opportunities, utility help, legal aid, and so much more. I also hope you’ll join us for Doing the Most Good Week May 9-17. We will highlight some of the ways you can use your compassion for others and for your faith in The Salvation Army as we work every day to change lives. Toyota Takes A Walk In Their Boots For the fourth consecutive year, Toyota’s Walk In My Boots program blessed approximately 150 residents staying at The Salvation Army’s Denby Center. The program, held in conjunction with the Detroit Auto Show, provides temporary tenants – mostly women and children – with new winter boots and warm socks. The automaker also presented The Salvation Army with a check for $15,000, which was earmarked for the recent Bed & Bread Club Radiothon. This annual Walk In My Boots event in Detroit has served as a pilot program for similar Salvation Army events in Chicago and Washington D.C. “We want to build more than just great cars and trucks,” says Michael Rouse, Vice President of Diversity, Philanthropy and Community Affairs at Toyota Motor Sales, USA. “We want to help build and improve communities through great organizations like The Salvation Army.”

Dear Friend, I hope all is well. The Salvation Army’s Bed & Bread Club® program serves more than 5,000 meals each day to men, women and children who would otherwise go without. That’s more than 1.8 million meals every year. In addition, The Bed & Bread Club provides shelter to more than 600 homeless individuals each night, more than 212,000 nights of shelter annually. This program is unique in that it serves many people via mobile soup kitchens. The Bed & Bread mobile feeding trucks are on the streets of Detroit 365 days a year, making designated stops throughout the day. Meals consist of a sandwich, fruit, beverage, soup (in cold months) and a snack. Hot meals complete with entree, sides and dessert are available on Thanksgiving, Christmas and special occasions.
