I had to go, I could not stay, So during the morning, I slipped away; I loved you then, I love you now, But I must leave you for a little while. Please do not grieve nor shed a tear, And I, in turn, will always be near; Think of me when the bright sun shines Speak of me with a gallant smile. Jesus loves us all, so never forget I’ve gone to meet Him in the sky; I’ll be waiting for each of you, In the sweet bye and bye.
The Whitener family would like to thank each and everyone for all of their loving thoughts and acts of kindness during this time of sorrow. With gratitude, our hearts are full; and words cannot convey the tender thoughts and thankfulness we hold for you today. For I am ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
Prelude
II Timothy 4: 6-8 (KJV)
Processional Suber Whitener, Jr. was born on January 2, 1932 to the late Suber and Willie Whitener, Jr. He passed away on April 24, 2017 at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia, South Carolina. “Big Shot”, as he was affectionately known, was educated in Richland County public schools. In 1953, he enlisted in the United States Army and was trained in Field Artillery. While serving, he traveled to Germany and Korea. Through his military travels, many memories were created which he shared with all that he came into contact with. He was later employed with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), where he was a dedicated employee, until retiring in 1993. Big Shot knew his way around a rifle. He was an avid deer hunter and one of the oldest members of the Jonesville Hunting Club, in Smokes, South Carolina. He enjoyed his family and had a sense of humor about himself. He gave a nickname to everyone he knew and always referred to them as such. As a loyal and lifelong member of Cleaves Memorial CME Church, he was named the “Father of the Church”. He was predeceased by his parents, Suber and Willie Whitener Sr.; his youngest sister, Lucille Thomas; and his daughter, Sylvia Whitener. Suber is survived by his wife, Edith C. Whitener, with whom he would have shared 64 glorious years in June; his children: Audrey Thornton of Georgia, Gloria Bookman, Paul Whitener, Bernice Blanding, Bernard Whitener, Terri WhitenerBarr, and Michael Whitener, all of Columbia, South Carolina; sisters, Alice Mayo and Gloria Simpson, and brothers, Ernest (Lela-Ann) and Benjamin (Claudia) Whitener, all of Columbia, South Carolina; many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
