IBM Almaden Research Laboratory

The primary challenge at IBM Almaden was to site a large facility in a rural setting without imposing the project visually or functionally on the existing agricultural community. To accomplish this, SWA carefully isolated a building site from within the 580 acres of cattle ranch property, and designed the facility to integrate into the landscape to make it invisible from below. Rock outcroppings and native vegetation from the site provided inspiration and material for the design of courtyards within the complex as well as tennis courts, soccer fields, bike paths, hiking trails, a garden terrace cafe, and a two-acre campus garden.
