mail, which in the 80s and 90s revolutionised the way people communicated with each other, has become bogged down under its own weight, turning into a time sink rather than a tool for productivity. According to a study by Warwick Business School, UK office workers send and receive 10,000 emails a year – or, to put it another way, one email every 25 minutes each and every working day of the year.

And the problem is growing Research by Radicati Group predicts that by the end of 2016, “the number of business and consumer emails sent and received per day will total over 215.3 billion, and is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 4.6 per cent over the next four years, reaching over 257.7 billion by the end of 2020.” But it’s not just the volume of email that’s the problem, it’s also knowing what to prioritise. Human beings can only do so much themselves and email overload is a common phenomenon, with important emails getting overlooked or lost amid the inbox deluge. Email is also an imperfect platform for collaboration, with no prospect for real-time communication or document sharing. This is a very real problem for companies today, as collaboration becomes increasingly vital at all levels of business. And yet the tools that have sprung up to try and resolve the email problem by and large fail to do so. Instead of one imperfect but familiar platform, organisations can end up with a plethora of new tools that each

deals with one very specific problem. Each of these will need to be deployed and managed, and will require a training initiative and period of adjustment as well. Even once all that is done, these tools often do not provide some of the crucial basic functionality of email. Instant messaging platforms, for example, frequently turn up the volume on distracting internal chatter without providing an ad-hoc way to communicate with people outside of the company IBM Verse manages to succeed where both traditional email and new enterprise social tools fail.
