Current owner Marsha Pearson remembers the winter when her parents Max and Joyce Flickenger (who lived in the house at the time) opened up their doors to the cast and crew of the movie. “They had been out searching the Carver County area,” she recalled of the location scouts. “They found this house and the outside looked very much like the one [the main character was to have] grown up in.” Several of the principal shots were filmed at the house, including in the attic and one of the home’s five bedrooms. “We always left it the same,” Pearson said of those rooms, despite an extensive remodel of the rest of the house. Pearson also recalled that that winter wasn’t exactly what the movie crew had been hoping for. “There was no snow that winter,” she said. “They had to make snow.” The snow was a big draw to Pearson’s kids who were young at the time. “My kids wrecked a couple of shots,” Pearson said. And though the crew yelled at them, it was one of the movie’s heart throbs that came to their

rescue. “Robby Benson saved me,” Pearson said, remembering that he put the crew in their place, reminding them that this was still someone’s home. “He invited us to have lunch with them.” It was a moment Pearson will never forget. “No, I never got his autograph, I never got his picture,” she said. But she does have an original copy of the movie she keeps in Arizona. “I won’t let anyone watch it.”

Development Pearson and her husband Robert left the “Ice Castles” home a year and a half ago, moving to a place in Prior Lake. At the time, their nearly 50 acres in Dahlgren Township had been optioned by Tollefson Development as part of a large housing development. Carver City Planner Cindy Olness said to the best of her knowledge the Tollefson project has since been scaled down from the original plans and will most likely be focused

All this can be yours for $1.8 million:

on the western side of County Road 40, across the street from the Pearson home. The Pearsons are still marketing the house as prime for development potential with great access to new Highway 212. To sell the home, they’ve enlisted the help of Chaska Realtor Jim Jacobs, with RE/ MAX Advisors West. Jacobs said he’s got “a lot of calls” on the house because it is highly visible, but hasn’t had anyone bite. “The price precludes the regular house-buyer,” Jacobs said. The $1.8 million price tag is largely due to the 49 acres of developable land. Jacobs said the county won’t let them separate the land the house sits on from the rest of the land or he would be able to list the house and about nine acres at $500,000 to $600,000. “It’s a nicely refurbished remodel,” he said. “It has all the amenities including a nice pole barn for large equipment. I realize that’s not very romantic.” Jacobs said that to date,

Despite the profits that the sale of her former home could bring in, Pearson is having a hard time forgetting the Carver County farmhouse. “I’d just as soon have kept it for myself,” she said. Pearson and her family moved to the farmhouse from North Dakota in 1965 to help her aunt after her uncle’s death. She and her now exhusband took over the farm, and its adjoining 360 acres, in 1986. They farmed the land, as her dad had, growing corn and beans and raising cattle and horses. They also raised a family there. Pearson maintains that it was a great place to raise children. “I would not have done it any other way,” she said. “It was a wonderful place. It gave us a lot of joy.” Pearson doesn’t know what will happen to the house once they let go of it (they currently rent it out). “I won’t go out there if they tear the house down,” she said. At one time, she had hoped to get the house on the National Register of Historic Places but said that a major remodel in 1993 rendered that hope impossible for now. Even if the house is demolished, Pearson will always have the images of it captured on “Ice Castles,” though. “It was a moving movie,” she said. “It reminds us to be thankful for everything we’ve got.”

he hasn’t been marketing the home as a piece of movie memorabilia. He didn’t remember if the Pearsons told him it was used in the filming of “Ice Castles” or not. And for the record, Jacobs hasn’t seen the movie. “I tend to shy away from movies with figure skating or synchronized swimming,” he said.
