Co-ed Intramural Ice Hockey League Rules

A. Individual/Team Requirements  Each team will consist of a minimum of 12 and maximum of 16 players.  Each player participating in the league must be registered with Campus Recreation and their name must appear on the official league list and/or team roster.  Each player must present a valid Student ID card to the League Convenor prior to the beginning of each game. If a player is not able to do so, they will not be permitted to play. A full signature will also be required on the game sheet from each player prior to the game. Please note: Campus Recreation has the authority to request Student ID cards at any time.  If a player is late for any reason, they must present a valid Student ID card to the timekeeper/scorekeeper on-ice and sign the game sheet. B. Equipment/Jerseys All participants are required to provide their own equipment and to wear their designated Campus Recreation league jersey. All skaters must wear Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approved helmets, facial protection (including full cage/visor – no partial visors and mouth guard) and full protective equipment (i.e. shoulder pads, elbow pads, protective pants, protective cup, shin pads, neck guards). All goalies must wear CSA approved helmets/masks (cat eye masks not permitted) and a regulation set of goaltending equipment (including throat protector). If for any reason a player does not comply with equipment requirements, they will not be permitted to play; all requirements will be strongly enforced. C. Captains Each team must designate a team captain. In the case that the team captain is not present at a league game, an alternate player may act on their behalf. Please refer to the Campus Recreation Participant Guide for captain roles and responsibilities. Please note: when a captain (or acting captain) receives a penalty, they will lose all privileges for the duration of the penalty. D. Ice Dimensions/Markings

E. Coaches/Team Managers Each team may have a maximum of three coaches/team managers on the bench (i.e. to open/close bench doors, assist players). These individuals must be current students of Durham College or University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and must receive written approval from the Campus Recreation Coordinator prior to any form of participation. All coaches/team managers must present a valid Student ID card to the League Convenor and sign-in with a full signature prior to each game as well as complete a Campus Recreation Participation Waiver. Coaches/team managers will be subject to bench minor penalties and game misconduct penalties as assessed by the referees/officials. If a coach/team manager is ejected from any game, they will not be permitted to assist the team in any capacity for the remainder of the season. F. Referees/Officials There will be two referees/officials per game. The decisions of the referee/official are final and may not be protested. G. Sport-specific Rules 1. League rules are based on the Hockey Canada Rule Book/Case Book (in general). 2. Prior to beginning the game, team captains are expected to meet in the referees’ crease and to introduce each other (during or after the pre-game warm-up). In sportsmanship, it is also expected that teams will shake hands after the conclusion of the game (referees/officials may exempt teams from this based on the tone of the game). 3. Each game will consist of three, 15-minute run-time periods; the last two minutes of the third period will be stop-time if two goals or less separates the teams. Referees/officials may shorten the game (i.e. game has been delayed) or terminate the game at any time if necessary for the safety of players, officials and fans. 4. Upon closure of the Zamboni doors, 17 minutes will be put on the clock and will commence running without stoppage. At 15:30 the officials will sound a whistle notifying the players to clear the ice in order to prepare for the opening face-off at 15:00. Please note: Players, pucks, equipment, etc. are not allowed on the ice surface until the Zamboni doors have closed. Any team or player who enters the playing surface before the Zamboni is off the ice and the doors are closed will receive a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct or a misconduct penalty at the discretion of the referee. 5. There is no red line offside pass rule; the red line is eliminated for this purpose. Delayed off sides are also in effect. 6. Icings will occur when a player clears the puck the length of the ice from behind the centre red line. 7. In clarification, slap shots are permitted. 8. In the case that a goalie is not able to attend their designated league game, they must find a replacement goalie from the league of which they are a part of (i.e. competitive). It is up to the team short a goalie to inform the Campus Recreation office of the change. 9. All penalties and/or incidents are reviewed by the on-site League Convenor, Campus Recreation Coordinator and officials/referees. Players will be notified of any game/league suspensions through a formal email. Penalties/ejections/suspensions are as follows: a. Minor penalties: 3 minutes in duration (run time). A double minor penalty (6 minutes) will be assessed to any player for body checking (body checking is defined as any visible attempt to hit another player and/or impede the progress of that player). Please note: all Intramural Ice Hockey leagues are non-contact. b. Major penalties: 7 minutes in duration (run time). A player receiving a major penalty will be ejected from the game and automatically assessed a game misconduct (resulting in a one game suspension). In addition, if a player incurs 7 penalty minutes or more in one game (i.e. three minors), they will be assessed a game ejection penalty, eliminating them from further play in that game. c. Misconduct/Game Misconduct: 10 minutes in duration (run time). A player receiving a game misconduct will be assessed a game ejection penalty and will 2

automatically receive a one game suspension. Gross misconducts will receive a two game suspension and will automatically be ejected from the game the penalty was assessed. If any player receives a multiple infraction (i.e. major penalty and game misconduct), they may receive a multiple game suspension. d. Match penalty: Any player receiving a match penalty will be ejected from the game and automatically suspended for one year (365 days). e. Fighting: Fighting is defined as attempting to instigate a fight and/or the exchange of physical blows between players. Any players involved in a fight (regardless of their level of involvement or actions) will be ejected from the game and automatically suspended for one year (365 days). f. Suspensions: Any player receiving two suspensions of any kind during the season will be required to meet with Campus Recreation to review their suspensions and to discuss the continuation of their eligibility within the league. g. Illegal players: Any team using illegal players (i.e. players not officially registered in the Intramural Ice Hockey league) will be removed from the league for the remainder of the season. If for any reason a suspended (registered) player plays in a game during their suspension, they will be removed from the league for the remainder of the season and the team will default the game of which the player was a part of. Players may not substitute for players on other teams within the league (including competitive and recreational divisions). H. Defaulted Games In order for the game to start, there must be at least seven players (six skaters and one dressed goalie) on each team present. If there are not enough players on one team, a five-minute grace period will be allotted starting from the official time of the scheduled game to allow for additional players to check-in; this team will however receive a minor for delay of game. If after ten minutes no other players have arrived, that team will default. The default score is 3-0. I. League/Team Realignment Campus Recreation is committed to fair and equalized competition, therefore, at any point in the season Campus Recreation may re-align players, teams and/or adjust the divisions. If there is any form of re-alignment within the Intramural Hockey league, the standings will be reset. J. Playoffs Campus Recreation strives to include all teams/players in playoffs, however depending on the number of teams and scheduling factors, not all teams will advance to the playoffs. Playoffs are single elimination. To be eligible for playoffs, a player must participate in at least half of the regular season league games. K. Facility All players are expected to show respect for the Campus Ice Centre (CIC), including the team rooms, ice rinks, spectator area/stands, main lobby and to all CIC staff members and employees. Teams are asked to leave team rooms tidy, with all garbage appropriately disposed of (i.e. trash can). L. Code of Conduct All participants are expected to abide by Intramural policies and procedures (as defined in the Campus Recreation Participant Guide), sport-specific league rules and to always act in the spirit of fair play, exhibit sportsmanship and to be respectful of all parties involved in Intramural sport programming. If for any reason a team or player does not abide by these policies/rules, suspension or removal from the league may occur. Please refer to the Campus Recreation Participant Guide for more information.
