Presented by American Friends of LIBI
Dear Friends, In the new year of 2014, the Israel Defense Forces will be facing a year of intense challenges and missions, a year in which your support of the IDF will be more vital than ever. The IDF faces renewed rocket fire from Gaza, shootings from Lebanon, and rising instability on the Syrian border. There's one thing these brave soldiers can rely upon: the support of LIBI USA. We give hope, encouragement and financial support so that the IDF soldiers will know they are not alone. The LIBI Fund is an an all-volunteer organization which works to care for Israel’s soldiers by sponsoring medical equipment, social and religious programs, as well as providing support to prepare the soldiers for life after the army.

The Paratroopers Brigade, known as the Tzanchanim, is an elite unit in the Israeli army with a history of carrying out special missions since the 1950s. Perhaps their most notorious success was capturing the Western Wall in the 6 day war in 1967. This beautiful picture shows two soldiers parachuting together off one of the cosats of Israel.

This picture shows the Nahal Brigade in action during a drill. The unit was formed from, and part of, the Nahal movement, which historically combines agriculture and the kibbutz movement with social volunteerism. One such example of this fusion is found in one of their battalions, who spend a year volunteering in lower socio-economic areas prior to serving a year in the army and then do community service for half a year.

The Home Front Command specializes in civilian protection. At times of war this unit is especially important in its role of organizing and instructing civilians how to, and how not to, act. Within the Home Front Command is the Search and Rescue Unit, who are shown in this picture, who are responsible for contending with home attacks, including bioligical, nuclear and chemical ones. The Unit are also active internationally, and are sent to aid countries in need for example during the earthquake in Haiti. Home Front Command Search and Rescue Unit Drill in Jerusalem
The Desert Reconnaissance Battalion is mostly composed of Bedouin soldiers. They are stationed near the Gaza Border and are experts in preventing infiltration attempts into Israel. They can determine danger by seeing a faded footprint and they use their unique skills, training and life experience to acertain whether there is a threat of infiltration. This picture shows a member of the unit during an important drill.

The Israeli army has many operations that they must perform in the field either in Israel, or in their various humanitarian efforts abroad. It is essential that army doctors are able to perform in all scenarios and this picture shows a field doctor during a drill.

Israeli soldiers are extremely hardworking and constantly have to be on alert, come day or night. This picture shows a soldier on duty, guarding, with the deceivingly peaceful horizon behind him. Nearly all soldiers have to do some sort of guard duty during their time in the army, and this involves them being posted in various areas, sometimes somewehat secluded, and demnads their complete focus for hours to ensure there are no infiltrations.

This picture shows the first operational parachuting drill in the Israeli army in the last fifteen years. It was a unifying event for the elite paratrooping unit and tested thousands of the unit's soliders, thus ensuring that they were completely prepared for future operations.

The Yahalom unit in the Israeli army is an elite combat engineering unit. Yahalom literally means a diamond and is an acronym in Hebrew for the "Special Operations Engineering Unit". Because the unit is so specialized in its work, its soldiers must sign on for a minimum of four years, an extra year than regular army service. The unit is also involved in counterterrorism operations and this photo shows the soldiers in intensive training for such combat.

This picture is a beautiful display of cooperation between different army units. Golani troops are filing into a black hawk helicoptor, which is piloted by a member of the air force. There is an incredible amount of comeraderie in the Israeli army, even given the diversity of the soldiers. This is rooted in the deep love and commitment soldiers have to their land.
