ILLINOIS MEN’S TENNIS • WWW.FIGHTINGILLINI.COM • (NCAA REGIONALS) Against Michigan, the team avenged its earlier season loss to the 20th-ranked Wolverines on Saturday, doing it in championship style at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Fighting Illini handed the tournament's second seed a 4-1 defeat in the semifinals, accomplishing the victory after putting on a doubles clinic against the Wolverines to take a 1-0 lead. Illinois followed that with tough battles in singles to advance to the final day of the Big Ten Tournament against Ohio State. There, ninth-ranked Illinois came up short in doubles and singles against the defending Big Ten Tournament champions, as the Buckeyes prevailed in the conference final, 4-1. Despite a convincing win at No. 1 singles by Anderson to tie the match at 1-all, the Buckeyes closed out with four straight wins to seal the victory. The loss handed the Buckeyes their second consecutive Big Ten Tournament title, third overall, as Ohio State also clinched the title over the Illini in 2001. ILLINI EARN BIG TEN HONORS Junior Kevin Anderson extended the Illini's streak to four straight years when an Orange and Blue player has been named Big Ten Athlete of the Year, announced the conference office at the 2007 Big Ten Tournament banquet. Anderson and junior Ryan Rowe also received unanimous selections to the All-Big Ten Team, marking the 11th straight season two or more Illini garnered the distinction and the 18th straight season an Illinois netter has garnered the honor. Anderson earned the conference's top honor as the topranked player in the Big Ten for most of the season, including a No. 5-ranking in the most recent April 30 FILA ITA poll, and becomes the fourth consecutive Illini to claim the distinction, following fellow Illini Ryler DeHeart's back-to-back accolades in 2005 and 2006 and Brian Wilson's 2004 honor. The Johannesburg, South Africa native began the season ranked in the top 25, and has since climbed into the top 10, where he has remained for 12 straight weeks. Since opening the season on a six-match win streak, the Illini junior has gone on to record a 25-6 overall and 9-1 mark in the Big Ten, including an 11-5 mark against nationally ranked opponents. Anderson also earned the league's first Big Ten Athlete of the Week honor of 2007. Rowe garnered the Big Ten laurel as the fourth highest ranked player in the Big Ten in singles at No. 22 in the latest FILA ITA poll, and has been in the top 25 all season long - his highest a No. 8 ranking on March 9. After opening the season winning nine of his first 11 matches, the Moline, Ill., native has recorded an overall record of 26-9 and a 7-3 mark in league action, while going 10-7 against nationally ranked opponents. Rowe also earned Big Ten Player of the Week laurels on Feb. 14. This year's All-Big Ten team is comprised of three seniors, six juniors, two sophomores and one freshman - five of which were unanimous selections. Half of the squad also is comprised of repeat winners. Illinois' Anderson earned his third All-Conference nod, while Michigan's Matko Maravic and Ohio State's Devin Mullings also notched their third-straight honors. Michigan State's Nick Rinks and the Buckeye pair of Chris Klingemann and Koniecko were all repeat selections. NCAA SINGLES AND DOUBLES COMPETITORS Juniors Kevin Anderson and Ryan Rowe both earned spots into the singles and doubles draw of the 2007 NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, announced the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee.

Anderson, who enters the tournament as the No. 5-seed, and Rowe, who grabs a berth by way of an at-large bid after finishing the regular season ranked No. 22, also received a spot into the 32-team NCAA doubles championships as a No. 5-8 seed. The duo comes into the championships as the defending champions, looking to become Illinois' and the Big Ten Conference's only repeat winners of the title. Anderson also took in the conference's automatic bid in singles as the top-ranked player in the league, while the Big Ten's highest-ranked pair of Anderson and Rowe also earned the conference's automatic bid in doubles. Anderson and Rowe's selections into the 64-player field for singles marks the 18th time overall and the 11th straight an Illini will represent the Orange and Blue on the national stage. Since 1997, Illinois players have advanced past the second round every year but two, while seven times an Illini has gone on to be an All-American by making it into the Round of 16 or better. In 2003, Amer Delic captured the school's only NCAA title, winning the crown by dropping only one set. In doubles, the tandem tabbed the 14th overall and ninth straight selection for an Illini duo into the NCAA doubles championship. Illinois has won a total of three national doubles titles (2000, 2003, 2006) and is the only school in the Big Ten with a NCAA doubles crown. Since 2000, Illinois has advanced at least to the quarterfinals of the doubles championship a total of five times. 2007 ALL-AMERICANS According to NCAA rules, players who enter the NCAA tournament as a No. 1-16 seed in singles are automatic All-Americans, while seeds one through eight in doubles also garner the distinction. For those individuals who advance into the round of 16 in singles also grab All-America laurels, while the accolade will be extended to those doubles tandems that make it into the Elite Eight. The final avenue by which to garner one of the nation's top honors is to finish the regular season in the top 20 in singles or the top 10 in doubles in the final FILA ITA poll. This is Anderson's third All-America accolade in as many years, while Rowe was selected for his second distinction.

ILLINOIS MEN’S TENNIS • WWW.FIGHTINGILLINI.COM • (NCAA REGIONALS) 2006 NCAA REVIEW Beginning last year’s march towards the NCAA Championship finals after finishing second in the Big Ten Tournament to Ohio State, Illinois had their eyes set on the NCAA title from the start. As the No. 8 seed, Illinois served past Western Illinois, 40, in the opening round of the tournament despite playing away from the Atkins Tennis Center for the first time in a six years, as the Illini had previously hosted six consecutive first and second round matches. Following the dominating start, the Illini topped then-No. 27 Louisville, 4-0, in the Round of 32. Taking down the NCAA Regional host in a closely contested battle, Illinois used its experience to swing past the Cardinals in the second round to advance to the NCAA Championships. The momentum, however, fell short in the Round of 16 as Illinois could not overcome then-No. 10 UCLA (4-2). The loss sealed a 24-7 season for the Illini, who had made their ninth trip to the Sweet Sixteen since 1996. ILLINI’S NCAA STREAK AMONG THE BEST Illinois is making its 12th consecutive NCAA appearance, which is the 11th-longest active streak behind LSU and Washington (13), Texas A&M (14), Virginia Commonwealth (15), Duke and Texas (16), Florida (17), Pepperdine (18), Georgia (24) and UCLA (31). This is head coach Brad Dancer’s second straight trip to the Big Dance. HOME COURT ADVANTAGE At home, the Illini are 13-2 overall in the NCAA tournament's first and second rounds, with its only losses coming at the hands of Nort h w e s t e rn in the first round in 1997 and Mississippi State in the second round in 2007. Every single postseason match the Illini has been hosted at the Atkins Tennis Center, which has for the Illini, become a seventh man in the lineup. BRONCO PREVIEW The Broncos of Western Michigan enter the contest as the MidAmerican Conference's automatic qualifier as the tournament champion and are the regular season MAC champions (5-0). They also are currently riding an 11-match win streak heading into the first round and are the NCAA tournament's No. 49-64seed. WMU clinched its MAC tournament title after defeating Ball State, 4-3, in the conference finals to capture the school's second straight and fifth overall league title. This is the second time that the Orange and Blue will face Western Michigan in the opening round, the last time coming in a 4-1 victory for the Illini in 2004 at home. That year, Illinois entered the championships as the top seed and finished runner-up to UCLA (4-2) in the title match. DRAKE vs. MICHIGAN MATCH AT A GLANCE Illinois also welcomes 21st-ranked Michigan (No. 17-32-seed) and 52nd-ranked Drake (No. 33-48th-seed) to the Atkins Tennis Center, as the pair will battle in the other first-round match on Friday. Drake (23-2) comes into the tournament as the automatic qualifier out of the Missouri Valley Conference, winning their second consecutive conference tournament title over Wichita State, 4-2, and sealing their 22nd-straight match win heading into the tournament. The Wolverines are coming off a loss at the hands of the Illini in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament, 4-1, but are overall 19-6 on the season and finished tied for second in the Big Ten regular season (8-2). 20-WIN SEASONS Heading into the weekend, Illinois stands at 18-8 overall, needing a Sweet Sixteen berth to garner another 20-win seasons. Illinois currently has eclipsed the 20-win plateau nine straight times, dating back to the 1998 season when the Fighting Illini carded a 21-6 record. Before that year, the Orange and Blue had hit 20 wins only once, that feat coming in 1984 (23-9). Since the start of its streak, Illinois squads also have reached 25 wins a total of 5 times (2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005) and twice amassed more than 30 victories in a season (2003: 320; 2004: 32-1).

HISTORY LESSON With history as its guide, Illinois could not have scripted their 2007 postseason story any better. At home, the Illini are 7-1 in the first round when playing at the Atkins Tennis Center, losing only to Northwestern in 1997 at home, 4-0. Overall, the Fighting Illini are 8-3 in the first round, dropping their opening-round contests the first three consecutive years they earned berths into the NCAA Tournament from 1996-98. Since 1996, Illinois’ first appearance in the postseason as a team, the Orange and Blue have made a name for themselves in the NCAA tournament. Overall, Illinois has played in the Round of 16 seven out of the last eight years, advancing to the quarterfinals (Record: 2-3) five times (1999, 2000, 2002-04) and the NCAA semifinals (Record: 2-0) and finals (Record: 11) twice. Since the tournament opened to a 64-team field in 1999, the Illini have advanced into the second round every year, boasting an 8-0 record during that stretch. Illinois’ all-time series record in each round is as follows (Record When Hosting): First Round: Second Round: Round of 16: Quarterfinal: Semifinal: Final:

8-3 (7-1) 7-1 (7-1) 5-2 2-3 2-0 1-1

Illinois is 14-4 in the past four years of the tournament. The Illini also have won at least three tournament matches, reaching the national quarterfinal in four of the past seven seasons. CENTURY MARK Illinois head coach Brad Dancer is currently two dual-match wins away from recording his 100th career-match victory as a head coach, and could achieve the feat in only his seventh year. Before coming to Illinois, Dancer compiled a 38-35 overall record in three seasons as the head coach at Fresno State University. He led his teams to two NCAA tournament appearances, and in 2003, his squad advanced to the second round, marking the farthest postseason run during his tenure. That same season, Fresno State went 18-9 and finished ranked 35th in the nation. Dancer helped completely turn the program around after it went 7-16 in 2002. Before his stint at Fresno State, Dancer served in his first head coaching capacity for the women’s tennis team at the University of Arizona for two seasons. His force was quickly felt as he guided the Wildcats to a berth in the NCAA tournament, where they eventually fell to USC in the second round. With Dancer at the helm, the Wildcats were ranked in the top-25 nationally, achieving the feat despite competing in a highly competitive Pac-10 conference that featured five teams ranked in the top 12. Since coming to Illinois, the Coldwater, Mich., native has posted a 24-7 record in 2006 and has so far carded a 18-8 ledger in 2007 as head coach. Should the Fighting Illini advance to the Sweet Sixteen for the eighth straight time in 2007, the squad can add the celebration of Dancer’s 100th win to the slate of accomplishments. DOUBLES CHAMPIONS: LAST TIME WHEN... Setting itself in the upper echelon of Big Ten men’s tennis, Illinois is the only team in the conference with NCAA doubles champions, three different tandems to be exact. Most recently in 2006, Kevin Anderson and Ryan Rowe paired up to beat the third-ranked duo from Pepperdine, Andre Begemann and Scott Doerner, 6-2, 6-2, in the finals. The duo became the third Illinois tandem to capture an NCAA doubles championship. The first title was recorded in 2000, when Cary Franklin and Graydon Oliver defeated the USC pair of Ryan Moore and Nick Rainey, 6-4, 6-2. Three years later, the dynamite duo of Brian Wilson and Rajeev Ram defeated the secondseeded doubles team of Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo from South Dakota State, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.

HEAD COACH BRAD DANCER SECOND SEASON Head coach Brad Dancer enters his third season overall and second as head coach of the Illinois men's tennis team. Dancer became Illinois' 19th head men's tennis coach on June 28, 2005, after serving his first year on the staff as an associate head coach under Illini legend Craig Tiley. In his first season at the helm of the Fighting Illini, Dancer proved he had what it took to maintain the success that Illinois tennis has become accustomed to over the years. The Fighting Illini opened the season on fire, taking down two of the nation's top-10 ranked teams, defeating then-No. 1 Virginia in front of a spirited Illini crowd at home, followed by dismantling then-No. 8 Duke on the road in consecutive duals. The feats propelled Illinois to No. 2 in the nation, a spot Illinois inhabited for a large part of the season. In 2006, Dancer led the Illini to their 11th overall appearance in the NCAA tournament, advancing to their eighth appearance in the Sweet Sixteen in the last nine years at NCAAs - the program's fifth straight. On top of its NCAA tournament success, Illinois went 9-1 in conference action to finish second during the regular season. At the Big Ten Tournament, the Illini cruised through the first two rounds, but in the finals could not overcome Big Ten regular season champion Ohio State, falling 4-2 to finish runner-up. Overall, Illinois posted a 24-7 record on the year. During the 2005-06 season, Illinois garnered its first singles No. 1ranked preseason player in senior Ryler DeHeart. In addition to DeHeart, Dancer led a talented group, including Kevin Anderson, Pramod Dabir, Brandon Davis, Ruben Gonzales, GD Jones, Ryan Rowe and Marc Spicijaric. In doubles action, Anderson and Rowe teamed together to make waves on the collegiate scene, becoming the best tandem in the country. The two ranked as high as No. 3 during the regular season, eventually claiming the NCAA doubles championship as the No. 4seeded pair in the draw. The duo became the third doubles team in Illinois history to win the crown, and the second pair to claim the title in the last four years. The Fighting Illini finished the season ranked No. 9 in the final ITA rankings, while DeHeart finished No. 9 in singles and Anderson/Rowe topped the doubles charts. Before coming to Illinois, Dancer compiled a 38-35 overall record in three seasons as the head coach at Fresno State University. He led his teams to two NCAA tournament appearances, and in 2003, his squad advanced to the second round, marking the farthest postseason run during his tenure. In 1999, Dancer served in his first head coaching capacity for the women's tennis team at the University of Arizona. His force was quickly felt as he guided the Wildcats to a berth in the NCAA tournament. Dancer's collegiate coaching career started at Michigan State University, his alma mater, where he served as the assistant men's tennis coach from 1993-98. Overall, he started coaching at the club level and academies in Michigan, Colorado and later Bradenton, Fla. Dancer has traveled to more than 20 different countries, working with elite junior development programs and numerous touring professionals. In 1996, he began his ongoing role as an assistant to Billie Jean King for the U.S. Fed Cup Team. Dancer cites the experience with King as having a profound impact on him, as she led by her incredible example and helped him mold his coaching ideology. Dancer earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration in 1993 from Michigan State University. For the Spartans, he played in the No. 1 singles spot and earned All-Big Ten honors his senior year. SLICE OF SINGLES The Illini are led by the racquets of its junior class, as No. 5-ranked Kevin Anderson paces the SINGLES COMPETITION Fighting Illini netters and also is the Big Ten’s highest-ranked player, while Ryan Rowe comes in 1. #23 Kevin Anderson (ILL) def. CRUCIAL DOUBLES Illinois has prided itself on its doubles play all season long, winning the doubles point 20 out of 26 times this year. Of those 20 wins, the Illini have lost the match in only two of those instances, those coming in a 4-2 loss to then No. 6 UCLA at the USTA/ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championships and then again on the road against then No. 5 Notre Dame in a 5-2 setback. The Orange and Blue are boasting an 90 percent dual-match winning percentage when taking the crucial doubles point. On the other hand, only once has Illinois been able to dig itself out of a doubles deficit, that coming when it dropped the doubles point to then No. 41 Tennessee at home, but was able to come back and pull off a 4-3 victory on April 4. DEFENDING NCAA CHAMPIONS Illinois’ third doubles tandem to win a NCAA title in the history of the program, Kevin Anderson and Ryan Rowe, opened the 2007 season a little rocky, falling in the second round of their first tournament back as defending champions at the Polo Ralph Lauren/ITA All-American Championships. The trip was worthwhile, however, as both made quarterfinal appearances in singles, losing to the eventual champion and runner-up, respectively.
