MEET PREVIEW The Fighting Illini men’s track and field team returns home to host the Illinois Twilight on Saturday, April 22 at 3 p.m. Throwing events will kickoff the meet, followed by jumping and running events that will start at 4 p.m. PROMOTIONS PACKED MEET A variety of promotions will be available to fans on Saturday throughout the meet, including inflatables and face painting for kids. Additionally, Illinois headbands, pizza and snow cones will be given out to fans during the meet. The lot west of the Illinois baseball field will be available for free parking throughout day, while the parking lot on the north side of Atkins will also be available.

LAST TIME OUT The Orange and Blue are coming off of a very successful weekend in California where they set 12 personal-best performances across the Mt. SAC Relays, Bryan Clay Invite and Beach Invite. David Kendziera led the team with event titles in the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles, while Jon Davis (5,000m) and Jesse Reiser (1500m) set times that rank amongst the top-10 in Illinois history. ILLINI TO WATCH 110m Hurdles // David Kendziera and Jonathan Wells One of the best hurdlers in the country, David Kendziera currently ranks among the top-10 in both the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles. Having won six of his seven races this season, Leading the conference in both events, Kendziera was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week on Wednesday (4/19) following his sweep of the two hurdles events at Mt. SAC Relays, including a season-best time of 50.17 in the 400m hurdles. Jonathan Wells will also compete in the event as he continues to develop in the multi events. Jumps // Jonathan Wells In addition to the 100m hurdles, Wells will compete in both the high jump and long jump on Saturday. An All-American in the vertical jump, Wells is yet to compete in the event since winning the indoor Big Ten title back in February and holds a personal-best mark of 7’1.5” (2.17m) outdoors. In the long jump, Wells set a new personal-record in the event on his way to taking eighth in the heptathlon at NCAA Championships, leaping 24’5” (7.45m). In his only outdoor competition in the horizontal jumps this season, Wells marked 23’8” (7.21m) at Eastern Illinois at the beginning of this month. 4x100m Relay // Mo Maat, Josh Eiker, Devin Quinn, Joe Haight and Cole Henderson With Cole Henderson taking the spot of Mo Maat last week at the Mt. SAC Relays, the Illini matched their season-best time with a 39.68 showing last Saturday. Ranking fifth in the Big Ten so far this season, the Illini will look to drop their time on their home track before competing at Drake Relays next week. 800m // Konrad Eiring After missing the 2017 indoor season, Konrad Eiring has quickly worked his way back to where he left off at the end of his freshman season last year. After clocking 1:52 in each of his first two races this season, the Illini sophomore dropped two seconds off of his time out in California last week. DAVID KENDZIERA NAMED BIG TEN TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK FOR SECOND TIME For the second time this season, Illinois men’s track and field hurdler David Kendziera was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday (4/19) afternoon. A redshirt junior, Kendziera led the Illini last weekend in California with a sweep of the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles at the Mt. SAC Relays. The Mount Prospect, Illinois native currently leads the Big Ten in both events and has won six of the seven competitions he’s contest this season. ILLINI LEAD BIG TEN IN FIVE EVENTS Four Fighting Illini athletes currently lead the Big Ten in their respective events, led by David Kendziera’s conference-leading 110m hurdles (13.60) and 400m hurdles (50.17) races. Freshmen Josh Eiker and Jon Davis both lead the conference entering the final two weeks, as Eiker clocked 20.45 at Illinois State and Jon Davis timed 13:49.55 at Mt. SAC Relays. Rounding out the four Illini is Jesse Reiser whose 3:42.37 time at Bryan Clay last weekend leads the conference in the 1500m. SIX ILLINI NATIONALLY RANKED IN TOP-25 The Illini doubled the number of athletes ranked amongst the top-25 in Division I with three performances in California. Distance runners Dylan Lafond (3rd/steeplechase), Jon Davis (14th/5K) and Jesse Reiser (15th/1500m) each moved onto the list. Joining the three distance athletes are David Kendziera (110m hurdles and 400m hurdles) and the 4x100m relay team.

18 ILLINI PERFORMANCES RANK AMONG TOP-48 IN WEST REGION Along with the six Illini marks that rank in the top-25 nationally, 12 others rank amongst Big Ten Athletes of the Week the top-48 in the NCAA West region, which would qualify them for NCAA Prelims. March 22 ILLINI DISTANCE CREW SHINES IN CALI In what Coach Turk called the most successful weekend for the distance group in awhile, the Illini distance crew set a handful of person-best performances and a strong steeplechase debut from Dylan Lafond. Freshman Jon Davis set the second fastest 5K time in school history in his first collegiate 5K, timing 13:49.55, while Jesse Reiser ran the sixth fastest 1500m race in Illini history with a 3:42.37 performance. Also setting PR times were Sean Pengelly, Dan Lathrop, Konrad Eiring, Zach Dale and Zack Smith. ILLINOIS SHOWING STRENGTH IN THROWS In back-to-back weeks the Illini have received big performances out of their throws group, with 10-foot personal best performance at the Big Blue Classic and Redbird Invite. Matsen Dziedzic started things last weekend in the hammer throw with a 195’0” (59.44m) throw on his final attempt to win the event. Aaron Wilks followed the performance a week later in the javelin with a 220’4.5” (67.17m) heave to win at Illinois State, while Dziedzic backed up his PR in the hammer throw with a 194’11.75” (59.43m) mark to win the event for the second straight week. KENDZIERA, WELLS EARN FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICA HONORS AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS David Kendziera placed fourth in the 60m hurdles and Jonathan Wells broke his own Illinois school record in the heptathlon, as both Illini earned First Team All-America honors at 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships. It’s Kendziera’s fourth All-America honor, while Wells’ takes home his third All-America accolade. The Illini placed 30th overall in the 62-team field. USTFCCCA TABS ILLINI 14TH BEST PROGRAM IN THE COUNTRY The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) ranked the Illinois men’s cross country and track and field program best in the Big Ten and No. 14 overall through the end of the indoor season. The Illini placed 23rd at the 2016 NCAA Cross Country Championships and tied for 30th at last weekend’s NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

JONATHAN WELLS WINS HIGH JUMP BIG TEN TITLE 2017 OUTDOOR SEASON BESTS Illinois junior Jonathan Wells cleared five bars, including his final height of 7’1.5” (2.17m), BIG TEN & NCAA LEADER IN ITALICS to win the Big Ten indoor high jump title on Saturday afternoon at the Spire Institute. Wells 100-METER DASH defeated Indiana contestants Treyton Harris and Paul Galas after Wells cleared the final Devin Quinn, 10.43, UNLV Invite Larry (Wisconsin), 10.34 height on two attempts as opposed to Harris and Galas on three tries. Overall, the Illini Lorenzo Christian Coleman (Tennessee), 10.03 recorded 51.5 points across 13 scoring performances and placed ninth in the team competiDASH tion. 60m hurdler David Kendziera set the second fastest time in school history, 7.69, to place 200-METER Josh Eiker, 20.45, Redbird Invite Josh Eiker (Illinois), 20.45 runner-up in the event. Ncincillili Titi (South Carolina), 20.14 JONATHAN WELLS BREAKS HEPTATHLON SCHOOL RECORD After redshirting last spring to focus on the multievents, Jonathan Wells broke the Illinois heptathlon school record in his first competition of the season, and then did so again at NCAA Championships. The Illini junior, a redshirt sophomore for the 2017 outdoor season, scored 5,685 points to pass Steve Monte’s 5,577 points scored four years ago in 2013. Already a two-time All-American in the high jump, Wells brings versatility to Coach Turk’s squad. ILLINI WELCOME 11 FRESHMEN In addition to the talent returning to campus for the 2017 season, Coach Turk will welcome in 11 freshmen after the group impressed in their final season in high school. In total, the 11 new Illini combined for 17 IHSA state championships between cross country and track and field. At the 2016 IHSA state meet, the signees hauled in seven state titles, three runner-up finishes and tallied 107 team points. TURK TABS TALENTED TRIO TO CLASS OF 2017 Fighting Illini Men’s Track and Field Head Coach Mike Turk announced the signing of three student-athletes to the 2017 class on November 22. All hailing from the state of Illinois, the trio has combined for two individual IHSA state championships and six other top-eight finishes. Thrower Bill Matzek scored in the shot put and discus at 2016 IHSA Championships, while Curtis Gordon (pole vault) and Brayden Hamblen (cross country) both won state titles during their junior seasons. MIKE TURK
HEAD COACH 6TH SEASON (11TH OVERALL) Mike Turk is entering his sixth season at the helm of the Fighting Illini, and 11th overall. Since taking over as head coach following a last place finish at Big Ten Championships in 2010, Turk has the led the Illini back to the top of the Big Ten, highlighted by four Big Ten runner-up finishes and the 2015 Outdoor Big Ten Championship. Overall, Turk has accumulated more than 30 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, including 26 years in NCAA Division I. Prior to taking over as head coach in 2010, Turk served as an assistant on Illinois’ staff for four seasons, beginning in 2006. During the four seasons, Turk guided Nick Brown to All-American honors in both the long jump and triple jump and Greg Shroka in the high jump. Turk builds his program around a philosophy that is based on four core values - unity, integrity, transparency and foucs - that aim to fulfill the University of Illinois’ mission to “transform lives and serve society by mentoring excellence and cultivating leaders.” These core values are met through a process oriented approach that is executed through engaging relationships and continual personal growth. In addition, Turk and his staff collaborate with the I-Perform initiative that seeks to improve student-athlete performance and well-being. I-Perform focuses on the “standardization of training philosophy, a comprehensive wellness plan and the analysis of current sports science literature and technology to enhance the training process.” Turk is a USATF Level II certified coach in the jumps and throws and as an instructor. He is a part of the USATF Coaches Education Level II staff and helped contribute to the USATF Level II Throws curriculum. Turk is a popular clinician and has spoken at numerous clinics throughout the country. He has also researched and authored several articles on coaching literature.

Since 2008, Turk has coached current American recorder holder, Gia Lewis-Smallwood, in the women’s discus. A 2001 All-American and Big Ten champion at Illinois, Lewis-Smallwood is a three-time USA champion, three-time World Championships team member and a 2012 Olympian. From 2014-15, Lewis-Smallwood owned the secondbest discus mark in the world (226’11”, 69.17m). As a student-athlete at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., Turk received his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 1985 and competed on the varsity track and field team. He was the 1984 CCIW Conference Champion in the shot put.
