Implement Educate Monitor Ask Before You Act! March 2011
Rubber Game, a softball student-athlete at Bay State University, is turning 21 next week. Her friend owns a club near campus and told Rubber she could have her birthday party at the club. The friend created a digital poster to promote the party with a picture of Rubber and the name of the club. She sent the poster to Rubber through Facebook. Rubber then forwarded the poster to all of her friends on Facebook to increase attendance for the party.
Rubber did not give permission to create the poster, she did not sign a contract with the commercial establishment where the party would be held and she did not receive any compensation for the use of her name and picture. Rubber even paid the cover charge to attend her own party at the club.
Is this a violation?
A
student-athlete is enrolled in a class that meets Tuesday & Thursday evening. His team is practicing at times that conflict with those classes. His professor has stated that he will allow him to attend a different section he teaches on Monday and Wednesday evenings, which does not conflict with practices. May he attend the Monday and Wednesday section without a violation occurring?
Rule revised for 2010-11. Award limitations still apply to enrolled studentathletes who have exhausted their eligibility. Awards to graduating seniors may not include cash, gift cards/certificates, gift cards that are redeemable for cash, a cash-equivalent award, or country club or sports club membership. Awards presented by a member institution must be uniform for all team members. Maximum value for senior participation award = $325
May provide a participation award only once per year So, can’t give an award at a banquet and then at graduation
Student-athletes
must be notified of renewal decision no later than July 1. Notification at WSU = decision input into banner
So, scholarships must have all signatures by July 1
Must
provide those not renewed and those whose aid is reduced an opportunity to appeal
Letter stating procedure comes from Financial Aid Office
One
way a scholarship can be reduced or cancelled during the academic year is for a “violation of team rules” Need to articulate to the team what your team rules are that are not covered by the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct Student-athletes have right to appeal cancellation or reduction
Student-athlete would have a good chance to win appeal if never given notice of what the team’s rules are

So, if in a second block class, PSA could participate only during the time the second block class is conducted
Participation during the summer, but outside a summer term in which the PSA is enrolled. A PSA may participate in voluntary weightlifting or conditioning activities on the institution's campus in the presence of (as opposed to conducted by) the institution's strength and conditioning coach during the periods of the summer that are outside the actual duration of the term or terms in which the prospective student-athlete is enrolled, provided… Such activities are not prearranged, the strength and conditioning coach is performing normal duties and responsibilities in the supervision of the weight room or facility in use (e.g., track) and does not work directly with the prospective student-athlete.
Participation during the summer prior to initial full-time enrollment when PSA is not enrolled in the summer term, but has signed a National Letter of Intent.
This applies to sports other than football and basketball
A prospective student-athlete who has signed a National Letter of Intent (or a four-year college transfer who has signed a written offer of financial aid and/or admission), but who is not enrolled in an institution's summer term may participate in voluntary weightlifting or conditioning activities (e.g., conditioning on the track) on the institution's campus in the presence of the institution's strength and conditioning coach, provided …
The activities cannot be prearranged; The strength and conditioning coach is performing normal duties and responsibilities in the supervision of the weight room or facility in use (e.g., track); AND he or she does not work directly with the prospective student-athlete.
Involvement by the strength and conditioning coach (other than in a supervisory capacity) or the involvement of any coaching staff member in any capacity would constitute a tryout.

University may rent dormitory spaces to PSAs at normal rate
PSAs
enrolling in the fall may request final amateurism certification beginning April 1. Any PSA who may compromise their amateur status (e.g. participating in a road race) should wait as long as possible to complete amateurism certification.
For
sports not in season (i.e. in 8 hour weeks), student-athletes cannot engage in countable athletically related activities in the week prior to final exams and during the week of finals.
Any
