WESTGATE/WESTSIDE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION 2018 BASEBALL/SOFTBALL SEASON VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENT
WWAA is a volunteer organization and to be successful we need volunteers. To support the league and players, each family is required to provide a minimum of 4 hours of volunteer service over the course of the season. There are many different ways to volunteer and WWAA encourages you to help beyond the 4 hour minimum requirement. On the registration form, you are asked to select at least one area in which you could serve your volunteer time. Note that there is no guarantee that you can fulfill your obligation in the capacity indicated and you may need to work in another area. It is your responsibility to seek out and fulfill your volunteer commitments. A $130.00 volunteer deposit is required at the time of registration. Once your volunteer requirement is fulfilled in its entirety, the 4-hour volunteer deposit will be returned. Please post-date your volunteer deposit check to July 1, 2018. Volunteer checks will be cashed within approximately 30 days of July 1, 2018 in those cases where the volunteer hours or commitment was not completed in its entirety.
OPENING DAY PARADE & CEREMONY AND PICTURE DAY WWAA has a long standing tradition of having an opening day parade. This year’s parade is scheduled for Sunday, April 22nd. All players must meet at Westgate School, 78th and Hascall Street, by 12:30 PM. The parade to the WWAA fields will begin at approximately 1:00. An opening day ceremony will begin as soon as the parade arrives at the fields. Be sure to wear your uniforms. Everyone is welcome to join in the parade and opening day fun! Team and individual pictures will be taken Saturday, April 21st.
LEAGUE DESCRIPTIONS Little Slugger Tee-Ball is for young boys and girls (4-year olds) and provides their first exposure to baseball. The intent is to have teams of 6 to 9 players, if enough parents sign up to coach. This keeps the game moving and kids involved. Each team will play about 6 games from mid-May through late-June on Sunday afternoons. Every player present bats each inning and also plays in the field. Coaches are in the field with the children to guide play. Shetland Baseball is designed for both boys and girls as a noncompetitive introduction/instructional league. Players start the season using batting tees and transition to coach pitch as the season progresses. Every player present bats each inning and also plays in the field. Coaches are in the field with the children introducing them to the fundamentals of hitting, fielding, and base running. No score is kept, so there is never an emphasis on winning or losing. The games are 1 hour long and are a great way to introduce kids to “America’s Game”. Pinto Baseball/Farm Girls Softball are noncompetitive instructional leagues that focus on more of the fundamentals. Children are introduced to ‘live’ hitting and pitching by having a combination of both coach pitch and kid pitch. No score is kept, so there is never an emphasis on winning or losing. Games are about an hour and fifteen minutes long and begin developing the children for future “regular” baseball and softball rules. Mustang Baseball/Minor Girls Softball are the first introduction to regular baseball and softball rules and competitive play. Games are entirely kid pitch and age appropriate base stealing is introduced, while fundamentals continue to be taught. Score is kept and an inter-league tournament is held at the end of the regular season. Bronco/Pony/Colt/Palomino Baseball and Major/Junior/Senior Girls Softball are the leagues for older players with the goal of moving to more advanced aspects of the game.
