FIRST PITCH Indiana takes a break from Big Ten play to travel to Indiana State to take on the Sycamores on Wednesday. It will be the first non-conference game for the Hoosiers since playing UIC on Sunday, March 18 as part of the Hoosier Classic. Since the Big Ten portion of the schedule increased to three games against weekend opponent, the only non-conference games IU will play after the start of Big Ten play will be against Indiana State, Ball State and Louisville The Hoosiers are coming off a 2-1 weekend at home against Purdue, who entered the weekend as the only undefeated team in league play. Indiana took both games on Saturday before falling in the finale on Sunday. Amanda Wagner was a huge reason behind both wins on Saturday. She scored the game-winning walk-off run in game one on Brianna Meyer’s double with two outs in the seventh inning to allow IU to come away with the 3-2 win. In game two, Wagner went 4-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI as IU cruised to the 9-5 win. Lora Olson got both wins on Saturday, going the distance in game one and then coming on in relief in game two. After Saturday’s two wins over Purdue, the Hoosiers had won four straight against the in-state rival Boilermakers, the longest winnning streak since the 1996 and 1997 seasons. When they take on Indiana State, the Hoosiers will be putting their eight-game winning streak against the Sycamores on the line. Indiana leads the all-time series, 54-17. AMAZING AMANDA Although Amanda Wagner continues to show opponents why she is a feared hitter in the middle of the lineup for IU. Her .353 average with eight home runs and 25 RBI speak for themselves, but she has drawn 17 walks to help her .459 on-base percentage.
In the win against Michigan on March 31, she had four RBI, including a three-run opposite field home run to put the game away. Then last weekend against Purdue, she hit .500 with two home runs, five RBI and a slugging percentage of 1.375. She leads team lead with eight home runs this season. The native of Burbank, Ill., has 19 career home runs and 64 career RBI as she plays her third season. With one more home run, she will become the 11th player in IU history to hit 20 or more career home runs. ALL ABOUT ABRAHAM Sophomore Jenna Abraham continues to impress at the plate this season, hitting .343 with five home runs and 16 RBI - all of which are better than her freshman season when she garnered Third Team All-Big Ten accolades. Only twice this season has she gone two consecutive games without a hit and has a team-best 10 multi-hit games. In addition to her prowess at the plate, she also robbed a home run in left field against UIC in the seventh inning for the final out of the game - a home run that would have tied the game. BRI’S ON FIRE Freshman first baseman Bri Meyer enters today’s game riding a five-game hitting streak, the longest active streak on the team. Since the start of the Hoosier Classic on March 16, Meyer has seen her batting average take off as she is hitting .341 over the last 13 games with one home run and six RBI. All of that compared to the first 24 games when she was hitting .250 with four RBI. SLAMMIN’ SAMMY Senior second baseman Samantha Berenter has been instrumental to the Hoosiers’ offensive success this season and is having a career year at the plate in the process. She has scored 20 runs, hit three home runs and 18 RBI, all of which are career highs.

2012 Indiana softball LUCKY NUMBER SIX When Indiana scores at least six runs in a game this season, they have posted a 11-1 record. When you compare that to last season, when the Hoosiers were 8-2 for the season when scoring six or more runs. SCORING FIRST The Hoosiers have scored a run in the first inning of 15 games this season and are 13-2 in those games. When they score the first run of the game - regardless of inning - they are 17-4. CLOSE GAMES With a pitching staff that is gaining experience by the inning, the Hoosiers have not been fazed by close games so far this year. In games decided by two runs or fewer, the Hoosiers are 9-5. In games that IU has had the lead going into the 7th inning, the Hoosiers are 13-2 HEY MAN, RIGHT IS RIGHT Junior outfielder Samantha Heyman made one of the most difficult transitions a player can make - moving from the left side of the plate to the right side. And this year the results have been dramatically better, as she is hitting .268 with three doubles and a triple and six RBI. In her first two seasons, she hit .179 with two doubles and eight RBI while batting from the left side. In addition to that, Heyman has been outstanding in center field, registering 15 career outfield assists.

CAWLEY-ING THE SHOTS Freshmen third baseman Shannon Cawley was inserted into the heart of the Indiana order in Georgia and showed that’s right where she belonged. Against No. 10 Stanford, the senior smacked a solo home run off All-American pitcher Teagan Gerhart to tie the game and keep the momentum in Indiana’s favor. She also hit a towering home run against Central Arkansas and finished the five games in Georgia with six RBI. For the season, Cawley is hitting .330 with three home runs and 16 RBI, including four sac fly RBI which is tied for the second-most in the country. FRESHMAN FIRSTS Freshmen Lora Olson and Shannon Cawley showed their prowess at the plate in Las Vegas, connecting for their first collegiate home runs. Cawley did so with a solo home run to center field against BYU and Olson did it against Memphis, a two-run blast to tie the game in the fourth inning. Brianna Meyer got on the home run train against No. 20 Michigan, clubbing a solo home run, the first of her career, to right center in the Hoosiers 7-2 win over the Wolverines.

The approval of the new facility fulfills a promise made to both programs that new stadiums would be constructed. The new $19.8 million facility will replace Sembower Field and the IU Softball Field which are both located on Fee Lane across the street from the Paul V. McNutt Quadrangle. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2012 with the goal that the stadiums will be completed in time for the 2013 baseball and softball seasons. Private donations and athletic department funds will fund the project. The North Woodlawn and 45/46 Bypass location was cited as the preferred location for the venues in the university’s master plan to consolidate IU Bloomington’s major athletic facilities into one neighborhood and support the new North Woodlawn Avenue and Alumni Walk corridor. Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf Architects of Indianapolis, will design the complex. “I am extremely excited for the future of the baseball and softball programs with this announcement”, said head softball coach Michelle Gardner. “The commitment shown by Director of Athletics Fred Glass, President McRobbie and Indiana University has been amazing. “There’s no doubt in my mind that this facility will further enhance our program moving forward.”

Michelle Gardner will be entering her fourth season as the head coach of the Indiana softball program in the 2012 season . She was named the eighth head coach IU softball history on June 9, 2008 after spending the previous six seasons as the head coach at the University of Nevada, where she was named the 2008 Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Gardner led the Hoosiers resurgence last year behind the arm of striekout queen Morgan Melloh and the bat of Sara Olson. Melloh was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and Olson was named First Team All-Big Ten. Both were named First Team All-Midwest Region and paced the Hoosiers as they advance to the NCAA Regional for the first time since 2006. Melloh set Big Ten and IU records for strikeouts in a single-season (494). Ind 2010, Jennifer Glueckert became the first All-Big Ten honoree from Indiana to receive Second Team accolades since 2006 as she led the team with a .389 conference batting average and had a hit in all but three conference games. While at Nevada, Gardner had an overall record of 187176 and 60-56 in WAC play and coached 34 Academic All-WAC selections, 13 preseason All-WAC selections, 21 postseason All-WAC honorees, 21 WAC Players of the Week, eight WAC All-Tournament selections, one WAC Tournament MVP and 2008 WAC Player of the Year, Vanessa Briones. The success of her players also began to show itself on the national scene, as three Wolf Pack players on the 2008 roster received NFCA All-West Region honors. Gardner, a native of Petersburg, Mich., led the Wolf Pack to an appearance in the NCAA Regional in 2008 and was named WAC Coach of the Year and her coaching staff was named NFCA West Region Staff of the Year following a school-best 44-18 overall record. She also posted a 16-2 record in conference play to claim the WAC regular season title, also the first in program history. Yet another first in the 2008 season for Gardner came at the end the year when freshman catcher Noelle Micka was named NFCA Second Team All-American, the first Wolf Pack player to ever receive all-american laurels. The 2007 season saw four Wolf Pack players receive All-WAC honors en route to 28 wins and an appearance in the WAC Tournament finals. All of this came one year after Gardner led Nevada to the WAC regular season and tournament titles and the first-ever appearance in the NCAA Regionals in 2006. The Wolf Pack record dipped below .500 in 2005 but they were still able to land a player on the first and second all-conference teams. In 2004, Gardner led Nevada to a then-school record 38 wins and saw Candice Rainwater earn First Team All-WAC honors, the first time in school history a player was named to the first team.
In her inaugural season in Reno in 2003, Gardner and the Wolf Pack went 22-35 on the year and were still able to place a pair of players on the All-WAC Second Team. She was hired by Nevada in December of 2001 when the university decided to bring softball back a varsity sport following a 14-year hiatus. The Wolf Pack began competing in the WAC with the start of the 2003 season and Gardner led them to 22 overall wins, the first of six consecutive seasons with 20-plus wins Before heading up the Nevada program, Gardner was an assistant coach at Arizona State (1999-2001) and Florida State (1995-1998) helping lead both schools to NCAA Regional appearances and a College World Series appearance at Arizona State. She was also and assistant coach at Bowling Green State University as well as a hitting and pitching instructor at the high school level. Gardner is a 1989 graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in Physical Education, where she was a standout pitcher from 1984-1988. In her senior season, she was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and garnered first team all-region honors as well. After exhausting her eligibility at Michigan, Gardner participated with several nationally-ranked Amateur Softball Association (ASA) teams in addition to competing in three Olympic festivals. She was also part of softball’s first appearance in the 1996 Olympic Games when she took part in the Olympic Trials. Garner is married to William “Gard” Gardner and they have three children, Lucas (10), Jilliyn (6) and Lydia (5).
