Today, as an Industrial Electrician, your powers are needed in the oil and gas industry. Industrial Electricians install, repair and maintain electrical devices and equipment in a variety of operations and facilities. If this description amps you up, then a career as an Industrial Electrician may be for you.

What does this career look like? This is more than simply keeping the lights on. A large part of your job is working with equipment operators to identify, diagnose and evaluate defects and problems. You use a variety of diagnostic tools to help you find the problem and find safe solutions to fix the system. You’re powered by information. You know how to read blueprints and technical schematics, and, you understand what areas need to be wired or charged. You use that information to plan and lay out electrical systems.

What would I do? You have the power to make things work. You may wire circuit boards for the control room, repair heavy machinery or plan electrical systems for robotics. You work with electrical systems found in manufacturing areas, processing plants and equipment. Not only do you install new equipment, controls and wiring, but you may plan electrical systems based on technical and engineering specifications and drawings. You maintain and repair systems to keep them operational and safe for everyone who uses them. You’re able to work with everything from big machinery to smaller, more intricate systems. Heavy machinery, environmental regulating systems, communications systems, motors, generators, transformers, robotics and control systems…. you may work with all of them. You are also switched on to the potential of electrical hazards, so you’re well versed in safety regulations. You know building codes and safety practices. Your projects are never complete until they are safe for people to use.

HOW DO I GET HERE? A high school diploma is typically required, along with completion of a four- or five-year industrial electrician apprenticeship program. The apprenticeship program includes required technical training through an approved technical school. • Trade certification for Industrial Electricians is compulsory in several provinces and territories • Red Seal endorsement is available upon successful completion of the interprovincial Red Seal examination

HEALTH & SAFETY TRAINING • Standard and emergency first aid • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) • H2S Alive (depending on work facility) • Marine Safety Certification required for offshore • Fall Protection • Construction Safety Training • Arc Flash Training • Confined Space Entry • Aerial Lift Training • Respirator Fit Training

HOW CAN I WORK IN LNG? As Canada prepares for the launch of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, this occupation will play a key role in: • Off-site fabrication • LNG export facility construction • LNG export facility operations • Natural gas pipeline construction • Turnaround maintenance When LNG takes off, you can be a part of the action!

What competencies do I need? You have the ability to follow diagrams of circuits and wiring, and use hand and diagnostic tools in testing and fixing equipment. Other skills and knowledge required for this job include:
