Composite Type of Split Cord Malformation: Report of 2 Cases and Literature Review Yusuf IZCI, Cahit KURAL Gulhane Military Medical Academy, Ankara, Turkey

INTRODUCTION:

CASE REPORTS:

Split cord malformation (SCM) is a rare form of spinal dysraphism. SCM may involve single or multi-level in the spinal cord. Different type of SCM also may be seen in the different levels. In this poster, we present 2 children with composite type SCM.

Two children were presented hypertrichosis in the back. One of them had type 1 SCM at 2 different level and type 2 SCM at the other level (Fig. 1). Other child had type 1 SCM at one level and type 2 at the other level of the spine (Fig. 2). Both of them underwent for surgical treatment and all septums (bony and fibrous) were removed with microsurgical technique and the filum terminale was also cut. No complication had been occured.

CONCLUSIONS: Composite type SCM is very rare and can be detected if the whole spinal cord is scanned with magnetic resonance imaging. Surgical treatment should be performed in the same session in order to reduce the risk of tethered cord syndrome in adulthood.
